When the temperature begins to dip, it can be difficult to want to leave the house-much less attempt to look cute when you do. From ice covered sidewalks to scathing winds, winter is not friendly to the fashionable. While I understand the struggle of wanting to look good, especially when going on a date with your special someone, it’s important to be practical, ladies. After too many days of freezing in the name of fashion, I have done a little research and am happy to share my knowledge with all of you!
The polar vortex is far from over, but thanks to these tips and tricks, we don’t have to let it win..
Colour Block
During the winter months it can feel natural to leave the house wearing black on black on black. Instead, try switching out your typical black pieces with a navy, deep green or Bordeaux colour. Whether it be a pair of jeans, jacket or boots, the subtle pop of colour is sure to be noticed and will help create an added dimension to your outfit. Bonus points if you opt for a streamlined silhouette by pairing darker pieces on top and lighter on the bottom.
Mix it Up
Try playing around with prints when layering your outfits. Not only is layering a button up under a sweater an easy way of staying warm, but it can create an easy yet chic outfit when done properly. Try pairing your polka dot sweater with a plain button down, or a striped if you’re feeling more adventurous. The options are endless as you can choose for either your button down or sweater to be your outfit’s statement piece. Â Â
Make a Statement
Change up your parka for a more sophisticated option. Fur (real and faux) coats are a simple way of making a statement in the winter, and can be done without having to worry about your outfit underneath. Fur jackets are a favourite among fashionistas, Anna Wintour included, so this will easily be your chicest jacket! If you’re looking for a inexpensive, or more humane option, Zara and Forever 21 are both stocked with beautiful options.
Play with Proportion
With all the layers that winter dressing requires, it’s common to feel like the Michelin man once you’re ready to head out the door. The key to not feeling like a marshmallow is to make sure you are properly playing with proportions. If you’ve decided to bulk up on your upper half, top your outfit off with skinny jeans or leggings. Â
Brighten Up
Pastels and neons are no longer confined to warmer weather. Break out your craziest colours to add an instant style revival to your winter wardrobe while catching the attention of the campus cutie at the same time! Pair a bright tank or coat and watch how you brighten up even the dreariest of days.
And there you have it girls-the most practical and fashionable ways to conquer the winter storm. If you’ve decided to try out any of our tips, let us know by tagging Her Campus uOttawa on Twitter or Instagram. Stay warm ladies!
