With less than a month left until final exams, it’s no doubt that we’re all starting to feel that end-of-semester pressure – crunching to do well on final projects, tests, essays, and labs through late nights and little sleep. One thing’s for sure: no matter what the subject or what the hour, study snacks are essential. It’s important to have a little something to chew on while our brain is chewing away at the work in front of you (I’m so punny). Certain foods have been proven to actually help decrease stress levels, so when the anxiety is getting to you, try opting for one of the items listed below:
1. Berries
Berries are rich in vitamin C, lowering both blood pressure and cortisol (otherwise known as “the stress hormone”). Whether it’s in a smoothie or a fruit bowl, don’t forget to incorporate berries into your study snack!
2. Nuts
Cashews and walnuts, along with almonds and various other nuts, are packed full of vitamin B and E, improving your immune system and decreasing blood pressure. Throw these into salads or eat them on their own for a great snack.
3. Oatmeal
Enjoy a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast or a snack. Oatmeal is digested very slowly in the body, which promotes the flow of the chemical serotonin – a very calm-inducing and feel-good chemical!
4. Oranges
Just like berries, this fruit is packed with vitamin C. Drinking orange juice or having an orange can help ease stress levels, since stress/anxiety can deplete the amount of vitamin C in your body.
5. Avocados
With studies showing that anxiety can be linked to a vitamin B6 deficiency, avocadoes are a great source of not only that, but healthy fats and potassium as well. They reduce high blood pressure and taste delicious. Spread some over toast for breakfast, or indulge in the ever-popular guacamole!
6. Chocolate
Yes, you read that correctly! There’s a reason we love this delicious treat so much. Dark chocolate especially has been found to boost neurochemicals, allowing for feelings of both relaxation and exhilaration.
