A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending Equal Voice uOttawa’s first “She Will Run” speaker series event. Equal Voice uOttawa is a chapter of Equal Voice, a multi-partisan group that aims to foster an environment in which more women are elected to all levels of government in Canada. The club provides opportunities for young women to gain political experience while actively promoting Equal Voice’s mandate. She Will Run has become a national initiative to encourage and empower more women into office. The hope is to offer mentors to young women to provide them with the information and inspiration to pursue their dreams. The Series will lead up to their largest conference in March, which will be a day long workshop providing young women with the tools they need to be successful.
At Equal Voice uOttawa’s first She Will Run event, they hosted Professor Dr. Mariam Levitt, and Lawyer Mrs. Alicia Natividad. Dr. Mariam Levitt is a professor here at the University of Ottawa and has been involved with The Association for women in science and the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology striving to achieve equal representation for women in the field of science. Mrs. Alicia Natividad is a lawyer with the ASN Law Professional Corporation, is an uOttawa alumni, and has been presented with many prestigious awards including most recently with The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Metal and the Province of Ontario Leading Women, Building Communities Award. Both women are extraordinary people in their fields and provided so much insight into the triumphs and struggles they have both experienced as a women in the professional sector.
To continue the amazing success of this first event, Equal Voice uOttawa is proudly presenting the second She Will Run Series seminar commencing on Thursday, November 27th in Montpetit 201. Check it out here. You can also find Equal Voice uOttawa on facebook or on their website.
