Many of us have the dilemma of over packing for trips, forgetting items and not bringing weather appropriate gear. To save ourselves from those unfortunate problems, here are tips to packing like a pro!
PLAN IT OUT. Check the weather for your destination and then figure out what activities you will be doing while there. After that, make a list of everything you will need, including toiletries, shoes and other miscellaneous items.
TRAVELLING BY PLANE. We know that checking in luggage for flights is always such a hassle because there are simply too many restrictions. So do what you can to avoid checking in luggage. Pack a carry-on bag and bring along a backpack or purse! Just be sure, they meet the weight limit as well as the size limit.
PACKING YOUR CARRY-ON. Your space is limited so you are going to have pack wisely and lightly! Take your list; place the items out on your bed or floor. Bring clothes that you can mix and match to make it seem like you are wearing different outfits. Once you have figured out which clothing pieces you wish to bring, start to roll them into tight logs and place them neatly into the bag. Try to keep the rolls relatively small, so that when you decided to look for shirt it is not in the middle of a giant roll. Roll your bathing suit and beach wear into your towel. Sort the rolls by clothing type or by wearing sets to keep organized. If you are packing shoes into your carry-on, try to choose light ones and comfortable ones. We don’t want to be walking the streets covered in blisters caused by uncomfortable shoes! You can feel free to tuck under garments and socks into your shoes if you wish. If you plan to pack delicate jewellery, pack it tightly wrapped in clothes, knowing that there is a possibility they might be slightly damaged.
RESTRICTIONS ON LIQUIDS. For all liquids, lotions and creams make sure to store them in clear bottles with labels. Then place all the bottles into one Ziploc bag. A Ziploc bag will save the rest of your bag from leakage as well as prepare your cosmetics for the security check. Place your Ziploc at the top of your bag so that you can easily access it when you have to take it out. Don’t forget the mouthwash, you will most likely use it before you hop off the plane to freshen your breath!
YOUR PERSONAL BAG. This is where you should be placing all of your paperwork, money, cards and technology! It is always going to be by your side. In this bag, bring an extra set of clothes for emergencies as well as basic toiletries. You never know when you might need an extra pair of shorts because someone spilled a drink on your lap. You can also pack a rain coat or umbrella into this bag in case it suddenly decides to rain upon your arrival. This is your go to bag on the plane ride, so pack a book and whatever you need to stay entertained. Some people like to write or draw on plane rides, so I suggest you pack some paper and a pen!
ON THE PLANE. Wear you thicker and warmer clothes on to the plane, we all know it gets pretty chilly with the air conditioning on. You can wear sneakers on to the plane as well, because they tend to take up the most space in luggage. If you plan on bringing a wide brimmed hat or any hat, wear it onto the plane to help keep its shape. A hat will also add to your stylish plane ensemble, if I do say so myself! Planes are known to recycle air and the air will dry out your skin if you are on a long flight. To prevent dry skin, pack a light moisturizer and apply it every couple of hours as well as a good lip balm. Feeling sticky and gross? Not a problem, pack moist wipes to use whenever you wish. They are useful for so many purposes, a quick body wipe, removing oil from your face and a fresh feel! Need to fix your make up before exiting the plane? Well, you have everything with you, so take out that blush, lip tint and mascara. Re-apply and you are set! Be sure to check your surroundings before you leave your seat, checking under the seat, cracks and crevices.
OTHER TIPS. Pack your own food because food on the plane is not always what you expect. Try to stay healthy and hydrated by cutting up fruit or veggies and snacking on those during your ride. Need your salt? Pack salted crackers, cheese and corn chips. You don’t want to eat too much junk food as it might make you feel uncomfortable over a long period of time. If you require medication while on your trip, make sure you have a signed doctor’s note to validate your drugs. Have a contact list and addresses with you in case you need to call or take a taxi.
Good luck and happy travels!
