The Halloween Hangover

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Come the morning of November 1, stores around the country will be rushing to usher in the new Christmas gear for sale. But you, my friend, will be rushing to the bathroom to usher in a raging headache from last night’s Halloween show down. You know how this happened. Gone are the days of asking neighbours for candy with mom and dad in tow, we now seek our treats at the bottom of the vodka bottle or at the mercy of the busy bartenders with our bestie in tow. And now, just like you did when you were a kid, you over-indulged… yet again.

But seeing that it is now a Thursday and it’s back to business, you’re going to need to get going and stat. We all have our remedies, or heard of them: the infamous tomato juice + raw egg + hot sauce, or the trusty breakfast special at F&S. You may need a different kind of boost this time around, since Halloween always ends up being a messy night! So here is a collection of tried and true methods to get you to a speedy, not spooky, recovery.

1) Bananas.

The all-around super fruit. These golden fruits are high in potassium, and I swear by them for a morning-after fix. Alcohol depletes our potassium stores, and with low levels of the vitamin, our bodies feel weak. It also makes our muscles cramp and ache. The sugary, fiber rich food will also help settle your stomach after a trip on the porcelain highway, and will help you keep food down. So grabbing a banana sluggishly on the way out should have you feeling alert in no time.

2) Gatorade.
This sports drink isn’t just for the Usain Bolt-in-training. The yummy beverage is high in electrolytes, which helps our body move, and will bring your blood sugar levels back up, helping you feel back to normal.

3) Water. Nothing better to stay hydrated and flush out those toxins. Water is the natural, sugar-free choice to keeping you on your feet while on the go.

4) Painkillers. A must for the headaches and muscle cramps. Advil, Tylenol, Aspirin, the list is endless. See bananas too.

5) Sleep + time.
According to MayoClinic.com, we could try a million remedies, but the best thing is, in fact, sleep and time. Our bodies also work wonders and repairs itself naturally while we sleep and rest. So squeeze in a nap if you can, or don’t be afraid to hit snooze for a few more minutes.

We could tell you to drink safe, but there’s no magic formula to help you determine when to stop. Every one has different levels of tolerance, and hangovers happen to the best of us. Just remember to stock up before a night of devilish debauchery to get back to normal, and have a happy Halloween!
