This August there was a mass hacking of celebrities’ phones by a 4chan user who then proceeded to post explicit photos of multiple female stars online. The images were posted to various internet forums such as Reddit and Imgur in addition to 4chan. Dubbed “The Fappening,” the photos quickly went viral.
For the first time Jennifer Lawrence made a public statement on the hacking of her personal and explicit photos. The actress was only one of many who fell victim to the crime, however her comments on the incident reach beyond these strings of attacks and go on to address societal issues.
As Lawrence is quoted saying, “it’s not a scandal, it’s a sex crime…the law needs to change, we need to change.” She has made it clear that she has nothing to apologize for. In reality, those who sought out the photos do, since they are “perpetuating a sexual offence.”
Many are praising Jennifer Lawrence for her unapologetic approach, as she described how she started to write an apology but then realized there was nothing to be sorry for. There are still some that think Lawrence should have thought through the risks of taking racy photos.
The statement has sparked discussion none the less on topics such as data security to female empowerment.
