As Movember comes to an end and our guy friends finally get to shave their upper lip hair off, the University of Ottawa is left to donate a considerable amount of fundraised money to Prostate Cancer Canada. While all students at the University put significant effort into promoting and fundraising for this cause throughout the month of November, a truly spectacular lady was the one helping spearhead this initiative. Lindsay Hamilton, the philanthropic director for the SFUO, helped organize Movember, alongside with the VP Social of the SFUO, and acted as the face behind the Mo’scarf. However, this powerful lady does not stop there. Lindsay Hamilton, in only a few short months as philanthropic of the SFUO, has had a huge impact on the campus and community at large and, as such, hugely deserves the title of this week’s campus celebrity!                                                Â
Lindsay, having already completed a Bachelor of commerce at uOttawa is now a Health Sciences student. While devoting much of her time to her studies, she still manages to be involved in a hundred other things. She took the position as the philanthropic director of the SFUO half way through the summer. In only a few short months, Lindsay managed to fundraise $70,000 for Shinerama! Throughout this campaign, she created wonderful relationships with the philanthropic directors of all fed bodies, as well as ensuring that everyone was as organized as possible. Only one month after Shinerama ended, Lindsay helped to tackle Movember, and through countless bake sales and coordination with fed bodies, uOttawa has raised thousands of dollars for Prostate Cancer Canada. Lindsay will continue her wonderful work as philanthropic director through a Christmas gift campaign that will donate non-perishable food items or products, toys, and apparel to local Ottawa families in need. If you would like to donate to this campaign, please visit: http://www.facebook.com/events…. Lindsay will also tackle the University’s largest fundraiser of the year next semester: Relay for Life. Knowing what a spectacular job she has done with Shinerama and Movember thus far, Relay for Life will go off without a hitch!

While Lindsay has contributed a huge amount of her time to the University of Ottawa community, she also devotes much of her day to numerous research assistant and volunteer jobs. She currently acts as a research assistant at the Heart Centre Biobank Registry with the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), is a research assistant with the Entourage Lab at uOttawa, and was a research assistant with the Prostate Cancer Research Factor Study at uOttawa. During the summer of 2011, Lindsay obtained the Geza Hetenyi Research Scholarship from the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine at uOttawa and conducted a research paper of the history of medicine.
On top of her research assistant positions, she volunteers with several outstanding organizations, such as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society, and the Faculty of Health Science Buddy Program. Lindsay is also the co-founder of the Rebounders Ottawa Chapter – a non-profit organization that offers support and networking opportunities to adults who have survived childhood cancer. She was also heavily involved with the Telfer School of Management when she undertook her degree of Commerce.
Further to her work and volunteer experience, Lindsay is an excellent student, having achieved the Merit Scholarship for Excellent Academic Standing and the Roger Guindon Scholarship from uOttawa!
While her accolades and successes speak of Lindsay’s persistence and passion for life, she is truly a wonderful and warm person. She is always there to help out whenever needed, and never afraid to be a true and good friend. If you would like to get involved in philanthropic and charitable initiatives with uOttawa, don’t be afraid to go and talk to Lindsay in the SFUO office – she will greet you with open arms!
