I don’t know about you, but I’ve gotten a distinct feeling of ickiness from most sex shops I’ve ever entered. Venus Envy, on 226 Bank street, gives off a unique vibe of classiness that makes one feel at ease in a world that can be generally uncomfortable. I’ve been trying to put my finger on exactly what about Venus Envy is so reassuring and feminist friendly since I first set foot in the shop, and I think I’ve finally figured it out.
An educational sex shop?
According to their website, Venus Envy Ottawa is “a education oriented sex shop”. This focus on sex education is what ultimately sets this shop apart from its counterparts. Upon entering the shop, you are welcomed by the friendly and knowledgeable staff who are wiling to explain any products which you may be unsure of. The website contains several online pamphlets ranging from information on sex toys like cockrings to finding your G-spot to a zine targeted towards trans women. In the shop itself, there are shelves and shelves of books geared towards progressive education, and sexual pleasure in general.
Gender-Inclusive Environment
As well as being education oriented, this shop always boasts an all-inclusive environment. You can find products and information to fit any sexual orientation or gender identify in a non-judgmental setting. It’s a brightly lit, and welcoming environment perfect for exploring ones sexual identity, and having this kind of resource close to our campus cannot be praised enough. In a time of sexual discovery, having access to educational resources to teach you everything you’ve been wondering and more can be very helpful.
Workshops
Interested? They also have workshops! Some of the recent ones are “Erotic Talk: Talking Dirty for Everyone” and “How to Hook Up”. Each workshop costs around 20 dollars, and must be registered for in advance. These workshops are a great way to expand your sexual knowledge, and have fun. If you’ve been looking for a way to explore your sexuality, utilizing this shop and its resources is a great start! Impress your significant other…and yourself.
