The #NoHairSelfie Campaign

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Did you participate in the #NoHairSelfie campaign this year? We sure did! The Princess Margret Cancer Centre started the #NoHairSelfie campaign to raise funds for cancer research and to raise awareness of World Cancer Day on February 4th. They are a world-class centre (much like Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, which our fashion show was in sponsor of) that’s leading the way in cancer research and treatment around the world. They use their findings in the laboratory to create more effective treatments for patients. The Princess Margret hospital is setting new standards for their patients while educating, innovating and researching.

So what’s up with this #NoHairSelfie business?

The idea is to take a selfie with no hair, so if you don’t want to actually shave your head, you can use the app too! It works by downloading the #NoHairSelfie app (for free) from the app store and it will take you through a step by step process on how to create your very own #NoHairSelfie. You can choose the shape of your noggin’, size, and even the colour of your spikes! I chose pink as you can see!

Anyone can donate funds to www.nohairselfie.com until February 28th. Along with taking a selfie and posting it online, individuals can also start their own fundraising pages through the website. They can encourage friends and family to contribute funds or make a wager, for example a good friend of mine, Adam Brisson, said he would shave his head if he raised $600, by World Cancer Day he had raised $2,500 and after a week he raised over $2,800! He kept to his promise and shaved his head on World Cancer Day to support his loved ones who have been affected by cancer.

Princess Margret Cancer Centre’s main focus is to be able to detect cancer earlier, diagnose with more precision, target treatment for each individuals, and support patients and their families through the cancer journey. Every effort counts in the journey to fighting cancer and whether you’re helping raise awareness, contributing funds, or in the laboratory researching, we are all in this together.
