Today, on October 11th, 2012, the world is celebrating the first ever International Day of the Girl. Announced by the UN last December, it is a day to celebrate achievements, address girls’ rights and take steps in the direction of equal opportunities. The Canadian government led the international community in adopting this day, in the hope that it will spark positive change that will affect girls worldwide. There is no doubt that the improvement of girls’ conditions and their access to equal opportunities will be a benefit to all : with over half of the world’s population being girls, it is about time that we achieve equality in all areas of life. Gone are the days of passive bystanders, inaction, and silence, the Day of the Girl marks the beginning of activism, change and empowered voices.
I encourage all University of Ottawa’s ladies to wear a smile on October 11th and to take a moment to appreciate all the opportunities we have and what can be done now to improve girl’s rights around the world. Happy International Day of the Girl!
