Seven Fun Ways to Ring in 2014

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

So…you can’t make it to New York City, London or Prague to see the ball drop or the jaw-dropping fireworks – that’s not stopping you from having an amazing start to 2014!

Although spending NYE in one of these mesmerizing cities would be incredible and unforgettable (unless you’ve had a little too much champagne), it doesn’t mean you are out of options on how to spend your New Year’s Eve this year.

Maybe you’re still unsure about how to spend NYE, or your plans aren’t working out as you had hoped. Here is a list of seven ideas for everyone, from the quiet collegiettes to the crazier and more adventurous ones.

1) Have a crazy night out with your best friends

This idea is for those who are willing to splurge a little and have great night out with your friends. Rent a hotel room with your friends, get some champagne, and find that perfect dress and pair of shoes to make NYE even more glam and glitzy.

2) Host a party

Another more budget-friendly alternative to NYE is to a host a party. Hosting a party can save you money, and the hassle of finding the perfect outfit, a hotel room downtown, and a club with cheap cover…the list goes on.

…theme party anyone?

3) Go to a pub with your friends

Maybe you are not so keen on going out clubbing or hosting a party. You could always go to a sit-down pub and have umpteen beers with your closest friends.

4) Spend it with your family

Many of you may be living away from your home, making the holiday season one of the only times of year where you get to spend time with your family.

If this is the case, why not spend New Year’s Eve with your family? They might surprise you when you find out they still know how to kick it.

5) Have a slumberparty

Channel your young, child self this NYE and have a slumber party with your girlfriends. Watch movies, do your nails, eat junk food…all while wearing your pj’s. Plus, now that you’re old enough, you can make your slumber parties even more exciting with some drinks.

6) Plan a romantic night with your significant other

For some of you, NYE is the perfect opportunity to spend a night in or a night out with your significant other. There is something so romantic and special about NYE, so take advantage of it and spend it with your significant other doing whatever your heart desires.

7) Try a new NYE tradition

A fun thing I like to do on NYE is to try out a New Year’s tradition from another country. For example, in Spain it is tradition to eat twelve grapes, one each time the clock chimes. If you successfully eat the twelve grapes it means you will have a great year to come, they bring good luck for each month of the year. Another tradition is in Denmark, where they throw old plates at their friends’ doors – the more broken dishes you have outside your door, the more friends you have. However, I usually try to opt for a tradition that seems safe…so maybe stay away from the Danish tradition…unless you’re in Denmark.

Even though you can’t make it to an extravagant city for NYE, there are still several fun and exciting ways to ring in 2014. Have fun and happy New Year!
