Top 10 Things To Do During a Snow Storm

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

You come how after a long day of classes and you’re starting to think about your plans for your big night out. Should you jump on the bus and head out to that party you heard about? Go out to catch a late movie with your roommate? Head down town for drinks with your man? All of a sudden you open your curtains to a full force snow storm. In a moment all of your ambitious plans of leaving your apartment are dashed as you realize you’re snowed in! What now??? Luckily for you, this is a 10 step How-To guide to avoid the blues during a snow storm!

1) Look up recipes online and see what delicious treats you can make with the ingredients you already have at home! It’ll give you a chance to get in touch with your Martha Stewart side, and give you something delicious to look forward to!

2) Check out the New York Times’ compilation of the 100 Best Books of all TIME. Find one that sounds interesting and read the first chapter; not only is it guaranteed to be interesting, but it may provide you with a conversation starter one day!

3) Snuggle up with a classic Romantic Comedy, a big comfy blanket, and those delicious treats you baked earlier and veg out! My suggestions: Serendipity or Love Actually, two great Rom-Coms that are also somewhat Christmas themed!

4) Call up your mom or dad and have that nice long conversation you haven’t had in a while! As students we get caught up in everything related to school, work, and friends and can neglect these loved ones we used to talk to daily! Your personal snow day gives you the chance to provide them with your full attention, and catch up on all the details you may have missed since midterms took over your life.

5) Go through your closet and do some winter cleaning! I know that at least 30% of what’s in my closet has never been worn or won’t be in the future, and many organizations such as Goodwill or the Salvation Army are especially in need of clothing for those less fortunate during the winter season.

6) If you feel brave enough to venture out onto your balcony or roof top, let your creative juices flow and build a snow sculpture! Whether it be a snow man, snow dog or just a snow angel, you’re never too old to get in touch with your inner child!

7) Go through your Facebook profile and remove any friends you haven’t talked to in the last year or two. Having too many “friends” not only clogs up your news feed, but can also brings up privacy concerns later on; nobody needs their 4th grade crush creeping their recent family vacation pictures!

8) Watch YouTube videos and snuggle in bed; how else are you going to catch up on the latest funny cat video or celebrity spoof everyone’s talking about? How will you ever know what the fox says???

9) Take a long hot bath with your favorite adult beverage. With all that cold wet snow flying around outside, a hot bath is just the thing to make you grateful for being snowed in. Light some candles, put on a relaxing playlist and just enjoy having nothing to do!

10) Take advantage of the internet and learn some basic yoga techniques! Not only will it give you a work out, but it will also let you stretch out some of that pent up energy and keep the cabin fever at bay.
