Considering the hypersexualization of our generation, it is shocking that few girls are aware of lingerie trends. Thongs and types of bras can definitely be a shy topic to converse about, especially in front of your male friends. In order to guide you to be fashionable under your clothes and to eradicate the taboo of this type of conversation, Her Campus U Ottawa is here to provide you the essential tips you need to stay on trend.
As most of you may suppose, underwear trends go in line with outerwear trends, especially considering we have seen more and more designers incorporating underwear as outerwear in their clothing lines. For example, Marc Jacobs and Jason Wu have both used the silky fabrics and wired cuts of lingerie in their ready-to-wear collections.
The past few years have been marked by a vintage come-back in the fashion industry without failing to influence lingerie. The simplicity of the designs during the 20’s through the 60’s aspires simple beauty without the distraction brought by trivial decorations.
Of course, this includes the pin up style everyone adores. Boudoir lingerie has been gaining excessive popularity, especially since the release of Madonna’s movie Burlesque. When worn, pin up outfits are sexy, fun and charismatic, yet simple. Some designs incorporate bright colors to feel poppy or sultry black and violet to feel the glam of a Grammy award-winning actress from the 50’s.
An upcoming trend to keep an out for are timeless designs that incorporate delicate details and whimsical patterns. The popular materials that will be used are primarily lace, silk and satin for luxury. When shopping for lingerie this coming year, you should be looking for subtle embroideries but stay away from tacky bows.
Also, unpadded bras have been gaining popularity for their comfort and the newfound confidence in women for their true silhouette. The unnecessary is eliminated from the designs, leaving the pure beauty of the materials, colours and styles of the bra on the body.
A few of the on trend colours to take in consideration this season whilst revamping your under-closet, are African Violet, Monaco Blue, Pistachio, Grayed Jade, Poppy Red, Pink Terracotta, Linen and my personal favorite, Antique Copper. This season, mixing bright colors and neutrals is highly recommended. For example, Green Tin with Grey undertones or mixing Poppy Red and Linen.
The New Eve consists of lingerie that is inspired by the French style, eliminating frivolous details and engaging a pure and simple beauty. This style brings back flowers into the designs, ‘epitomizing the most eternal form of beauty’, as Interfilière described.
Symbolism, contrary to The New Eve, is the dark side of lingerie. Letting black rule and seduce its viewers, creating designs that are erotic and mysterious, yet refined and sophisticated.
Visionary represents lingerie that is inspired by the 20’s, 50’s and 60’s with a modern twist. Incorporating new technologies into old designs, the designer’s creativity is pushed to a new level. Architectural details make a statement and add to the new, modern and textured creations.
Last but not least, the fourth trend to consider is Play Time. This eliminates boundaries and gives the opportunity to the designers to ‘play’. Creativity is essential for this trend, where maturity reigns. The designs are based on magical universes and the elimination of tradition, wanting to be different and to revolutionize.
Some of you might be asking yourselves how I still haven’t talked about Victoria’s Secret by now. Well, I’m simply keeping the best for last. As most of you know, their annual fashion show, where we see glorious wings all night long, was on December 4, 2012. Another night where studying took a back seat.
This season, Victoria’s Secret really took into account the Play Time trend. Many of their creations are inspired by the Circus, showcasing lingerie we never thought possible or even imaginable. You will be seeing wings formed by vines, flowers and feathers. The outfits are far from ordinary, demonstrating originality and imagination at their fullest.
Finally, trends do not only apply to outerwear, but also to our underwear. Nevertheless, I adamantly believe that lingerie should be our favourite purchases since we have the chance to truly buy what we love. What Vogue believes is a faux pas does not apply to our underwear. This is because nobody can actually see them, unless we choose otherwise. What we wear under our clothes is at our discretion. Nobody can critique what he or she cannot see. Whether you want to wear thongs or high-waisted cheeky lovers, what matters is how comfortable you are when wearing them…and how sexy you feel!
