Trick or Treat: Your Guide to Halloween in the Capital

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

Ahh…It’s that time of year again when the snow is slowly coming and the weather is getting colder. The pumpkin spiced everything is almost out of stock, and it won’t be long until Starbucks will switch the Pumpkin Spiced Latte for the Ginger Bread Latte (the much better latte in my humble opinion). Finally, the beautiful hues of the fall weather will soon be replaced by a white blanket of snow (or ice – it is Ottawa after all!) You might be feeling a bit saddened by this last truth, but is there any better way to send out the fall season than Halloween?

Halloween is the one time of year where we can act like kids and dress up without receiving the crazy looks one would expect any other day of the year. As we have aged, Halloween has changed significantly, the prefix cute has evolved to sexy, and it is probably frowned upon to go door-to-door saying trick or treat. We still enjoy dressing up, and if Pintrest and other sites have anything to say, many people have great ideas and they will be AMAZING. But how are you going to show off all your hard work, where are you going to party this Halloween?

Let’s get the most important stuff out of the way: you guys are looking to PARTY. Seeing as the 31st falls on Thirsty Thursday (or Thursday as the grown-ups call it), tons of people will be out. Pub 101 is hosting a Halloween Pub crawl called, called the Halloween Howler Club Crawl 2013 (you can get your tickets online). It starts at 6:30 pm, and you will go to four different Halloween parties throughout the whole night. This sounds like the more ambitious of the Halloween parties, and there are tons happening. If you keep your eyes open around campus some departments are also putting on parties. HSS, HK and Nursing are throwing a Great Gatsby party at Mansion. You can get more information on the facebook group here. There are tons of parties happening all weekend, so if you have classes early on Friday, don’t worry, you won’t miss out on the chance to show off your costume!

We here at Her Campus U Ottawa know that not everyone is into drinking and dancing all night long, and there are tons of other things happening in the capital region. The Haunted Walk puts on special tours during the Halloween season not seen other times of the year. This year, the Incident at The Bunker looks scary! Their stories are true which makes it all the creepier as you follow along. Tickets are available online through their website or you can visit their office at 46 ½ Sparks Street. If you like the historic vibe, you can check out Billings Estate National Historic Site. Check out this CTV news spot for a highlight of this attraction. For all of you thrill seekers out there, if stories are not enough, how about an entire haunted house? Originally called Chills for CHEO, the newly branded Fury of the Fallen is sure to scare the living day-light out of anyone who enters through their doors and is definitely not meant for anyone under 14. Further information can be found on their website. For an escape out of the city and for something a bit more rustic, visit Saunders Farms for a Haunted Hayride and many other activities like Zombie Paint Ball.

Whatever you end up doing this Halloween, and wherever it might be, remember to be safe out there and have a fun packed Halloween from Her Campus U Ottawa!

It was wonderful to work with Her Campus UOttawa. I am an English student who is interested in politics and economics. I love to travel (I have been to China, Thialand, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland), watch and play sports (Go Leafs Go), play video games (I am currently replaying the Legend of Zelda games for N64), and bake yummy treats (chocolate or lemon flavored). Since leaving HerCampus and UOttawa I have gone on to the University of Saskatchewan and entered into the Collage of Education.
