U Ottawa On: Terrible Breakups

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

One of Her Campus U Ottawa’s favourite local bands, The Love Machine, has released a music video for their new song “With You.” Band member, Jordan (far right on the photo), was the DJ at our Catwalk for the Cure Fashion Show this January, but if you want to know more about their original music, keep on reading!

“With You” was written by Jordan David and Michael Laing, and according to Jordan, it is the most honest song that The Love Machine has ever written. The music video for “With You” was released, very appropriately, on the most romantic day of the year – Valentine’s Day. The idea behind the song is basically about being in a relationship that you know isn’t right for you no matter how hard you try to shake it and listening to that inner voice that says move on. It also touches on the toxic side of relationships that everyone goes through at some point or another. We can all relate to that, right? Check out the video below!

The Love Machine’s EP is available for download on their website for the price of $0!

The song has inspired us to ask U Ottawa students* to share some of their most terrible break up stories. Here is what they had to say:

“My high school boyfriend and I were on the same Improv team. We were on and off a lot and extremely emotional, which meant all of our break ups were screaming fights. He decided that right before we went on stage before a big Improv show would be an ideal time to break up again. Worst 10 minutes of my life pretending to like each other in front of hundreds of people. I think my mic caught me telling him where to shove it walking off stage.” – Sarah, 1st year student

“I wasn’t with this guy all that long before I saw his true colours. I caught him taking a video of me giving him head without my knowledge or permission. That was the end of that relationship!” – Sophia, 4th year student

“I was dating this guy at the end of first year and we had one class together so we decided it was a good idea to “study” for it together. Worst idea ever! I think I did terrible, GOSH, all in the name of love. But after finals I was going away on a month long trip to China, so my friends hosted a going away party and he was supposed to escort me. On the day of, he decides to come over and hang out for 5 hours, just joking and watching TV and then he decides to tell me that he cannot take me to my own going away party and is scared I will find someone new in the time that I am gone. So, I went to my own going away party looking like I had pufferfish for eyes. What a lovely night and a flight the next morning. MLIA though” – Emily, 3rd year student

“It was at the end of the semester and I’d gone home for a week to decompress from my first year at university. During this week, I was texting my boyfriend who was still in Ottawa non-stop. He was the one who was texting the most when I think about it. He’d say he really missed me and all…When I came back to Ottawa, we were supposed to meet up. I texted him to ask if he was still up to come over. He then sent a novel of a text saying that he wasn’t feeling ”it” anymore, that it was like falling out of love… The only thing I texted back was: You’re being a coward by texting me that instead of saying it to my face! He then replied: well it’s the best way to communicate for me right now. I didn’t reply to that. He later sent me a text saying: “I wish we could give it another a try later ;)” I remember thinking to myself: “where are the cameras?”” – Joshua, 2nd year student

“I walked in on him while him and my best friend were making out…….. on my birthday. The end.” – Lily, 3rd year student

“I really don’t have any out of the ordinary break up stories, so I’m going to share one of an unnamed friend from home; she and her boyfriend were going through a rough patch in like grade 11 (really serious time I know ;)) and she had decided to give him one more chance to prove that he wasn’t a lying scum bag… and guess what? HE WAS. Two days later he gets tagged in pictures of him kissing another girl on Facebook from that same weekend. I mean she technically broke up with him, but he really ended the relationship” – Ava, 4th year student

“Long story short, I was crazy about this guy I was seeing, and he broke up with me over Christmas. The best part? For Christmas he got me a fish that died the next day. He couldn’t commit to me, but I was supposed to commit to a fish? If there was ever a great metaphor, that fish was it. R.I.P. Fish, December 26, 2013 – December 27, 2013” – Rebecca, 3rd year student

“It was the second day into my grade 12 finals, basically the most important day of my high school career. I was working at my job at Subway and I get this weird text from my boyfriend: We are done, don’t ever contact me again, this is over. Me thinking someone took his phone I called him and was like nice joke, he replied why are you calling we are over. Here I am at subway bawling my eyes out as a rush of people come in leaving the only other person working trying to handle this by herself. Instead of studying I went home (after calling in my amazing friend to finish my shift) had a bubble bath with a bottle of wine and playing all the saddest music I could find on my iPod. The real kicker of this story, right before I arrived in Ottawa for my first semester, he was ENGAGED. Yes, that’s right, he was about to marry his ex, although he told, the day before we broke up, that he didn’t understand why he ever dated her”  – Faith, 3rd year student

“When I was fifteen I dated this guy for about a month. Looking back it wasn’t a big deal, but back then I was so excited about it because he was so popular and all. The few times we went to parties together I tried to be friendly with his friends because I figured it would be important for them to like me. My bf calls me out of the blue after a month, and says that he’s not feeling it anymore, so it’s over. I was just so shocked that I didn’t know what to say! Right before he hangs up, he tells me that btw his best guy friend is interested in me, so if we wanna give it a shot go for it. Like, really? Did I mean that little to you that you’re trying to set me up with your best friend a nanosecond after our breakup?” – Maya, 3rd year student

“I haven’t been through any bad breakups, but I’ll share one of my friend’s. She’d been in a relationship for over a year and her boyfriend went to India early January to pursue his dream of photography. So she had been face-timing him for a while. She went on Facebook and noticed a bunch of messages. When she looked into the messages, she realized she was logged in on her boyfriends account and saw that  he’d been messaging a bunch of girls for a few months. She confronted him about it and he just said he wasn’t feeling it anymore. And little did he know she still saw that he was messaging another girl as this was happening and she was seeing the conversation go on. That was a pretty shady break up” – Matt, 2nd year student

“After my high school bf came back from a trip to Montreal, he came over to my place to hang out. He kept bringing up a girl who he was friends with and I noticed that he kept messaging someone and hiding the phone from me. We started play-fighting until he took his phone out to message – whaddaya know – one of the girl’s best friends. They were asking him to ditch me and hang out with them. The play-fighting started to get a bit more violent as I was punching him pretty hard. He started freaking out at me. After a while I calmed down and apologized, but he was furious and we ended the day on pretty bad terms. I was so embarrassed, and kept texting him apologies for how I had over-reacted. The next Monday at school he broke up with me, and the girl from the trip dumped her boyfriend – they immediately started hooking up. My best friend, who had also been on the trip, told me about how flirtatious they both were: holding hands, laying in bed together – my friend went so far as to tell me he cheated on me, which he and the girl denied vehemently. I just want to add here that regardless of the BS, he and I are civil now. As sh*tty and embarrassing as the whole thing was, I don’t regret a single bit of it – I learned a lot, and I stayed true to my feelings towards him. I really thought I loved the guy, and I’m proud that I’m willing to risk plenty for love. A few heartbreaks aren’t going to botch that up” – Claire, 3rd year student

“In HS my friend convinced me to go on a double date with her, her new boyfriend and his friend. I thought it would be really fun and I could actually like the guy they set me up with since her boyfriend was in a band, had a lot of friends, and worked at the local starbucks (coolest guy ever, am I right?). Well, we went on the double and as you can guess, it was AWFUL! The guy had TERRIBLE manners… he didn’t even properly introduce himself to me! Secondly, we went to the movies and he didn’t offer to pay (understandable though- it was a first date) and once the movie started he left to go to the bathroom and when he came back he had purchased snacks for himself….and only himself! He didn’t even offer to share with anyone. I couldn’t wait to get out of there, but on our way home he insisted on stopping at McDonalds to get a snack and the 3 of us had to sit there for almost an hour while he ate all his food. My friend is still apologizing to me for that one!” – Hannah, 3rd year student

“One of my close friends started dating his girlfriend during grade 10, they went away to university together and shared an apartment. In the summer, he took his girlfriend out for breakfast at her favourite restaurant for her birthday. She broke up with him while waiting for the food to come. They then had to awkwardly sit through a meal together and then she left him to pay” – Kate, 3rd year student

“Where to begin? There was the boy who text-dumped me moments after I got on the bus back from seeing him the same day he introduced me to all his friends. The boy who wasn’t out to his family and made me hide in an unlocked minivan parked in his driveway when it turned out his sister was still home…and then decided two days later he “wasn’t ready” for a relationship – he was the one who asked me out. He is also quite obviously gay, who knows who he thought he was fooling. The boy from Newfoundland who, in the month or two he was in Toronto managed to find five boys to cheat on me with – which he then lied about to my face. He was also the first guy I slept with, which was an added benefit, too. But I think the one that takes the cake was the boy who was a coke addict, lied to me about being high, used every opportunity to get wasted, encouraged my self-destructive habits, went through withdrawal not once, twice, but three times in front of me (we dated maybe three months?), cheated on me with both boys and his ex girlfriend, and then capped it all off by sexually assaulting one of my best friends…and then denying it all. He got his ass dumped at prom in front of his entire school. He called me multiple times a night for four months after I had left for university and then left me a drunken voicemail on NYE telling me he was sorry but he’d done nothing wrong and saying that I was “his new year’s resolution.”It’s safe to say I’ve had questionable judgment when it comes to boys.” – Will, 3rd year student

“My best friend in high school was seeing this guy who I could not stand. One of those who wears a beanie with the long bangs and talks about how hardcore he is and how emotional he is etc. while actually being a really self-centered and ridiculous guy. Also, he was heavily into drugs and got my friend doing some pretty awful things. Anyways, long story short he cheated on her with our other, now former, best friend. Best part of the whole story? When she dumped him he said it was really her fault for trusting the two to be together alone. Needless to say, when this guy ended up transferring to our school, I let everyone know just what a scumbag he was. Do I regret it? Nope. I saw the tears my friend cried for weeks and no one deserved to go through that.” – Isabella, 3rd year student

“Not a terrible break-up story, but quite empowering. I was dating this older guy for 8 months when I realized our relationship wasn’t going anywhere. We were in a long distance situation, he was much older, and we were in different places in our life. Not to mention he didn’t always treat me the best. One morning, I woke up and decided to end it. After months of being in a rocky relationship, it was the best decision I have ever made, relationship-wise.” – Emma, 4th year student

“My boyfriend of two years walked into my apartment one morning and broke up with me. We both saw it coming, but he could have stayed longer than 5 minutes, or at least given me the chance to change out of my onesie.” – Jenna, 1st year student

“One summer I started seeing a guy at work. Everyone thought that he just had a big crush on me, but had no idea that we were secretly going on dates. Music was one of the things that brought us together, so we both bought each other passes to a music festival that fall. The first night of the festival rolled around and I told him that I just wasn’t feeling it anymore. It was right before the headliner, who happened to be his favorite musician that summer. I couldn’t just ditch him, so we ended up awkwardly watching the whole show, surrounded by people who were blissfully unaware of what was going on. The worst part? We still had tickets to the next night’s show…” – Hailey 3rd year student
