Why it’s Important to Support Local Businesses During Covid-19

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

During Covid-19, many local businesses are taking a big hit or are struggling to stay afloat. Right now, it is more important than ever to support our local businesses because the sales that they’re missing out on goes to help feed their families, support their local economy, and it keeps money out of the pockets of large corporations.

Local businesses are crucial in keeping local economies running and can greatly impact communities in many positive ways, including lessening the number of large-scale corporations in neighbourhoods and creating jobs for locals. They also impact the rest of the world since large corporations are normally unethical and do not care about economic, environmental, or social impacts whereas local business owners tend to care more about those things. It’s in their best interest to keep their work safe and sustainable for their communities as it is their home too.

Although it is sometimes more expensive to shop with local businesses compared to large stores/corporations, it is well worth the extra cost since these small businesses are being run by people who want to better their communities. It’s worth spending a little bit more money when small businesses care about their products and costumers.

Next time you need an item or are craving a meal, check if a local business can supply you with what you need. It might just be the best thing you’ve ever discovered!
