Dairy is definitely high on my list of go–to foods, but it unfortunately doesn’t agree with my body. I’m not lactose intolerant, but dairy (specifically cheese) is one of those things that leaves me with an instant headache and stomach ache. Over the years, I’ve discovered some amazing dairy–free products that are great alternatives and still satisfy that craving incredibly well.

Instead of pushing through the pain and dealing with stomach aches from creamy, heavy cheese–based dishes, I compiled a list of the best substitutes. Personally, I believe in intuitive eating—eating what feels good for your body rather than following strict diets. So, if cheese doesn’t bother your stomach, go get some brie and parmesan and eat for both of us! On the other hand, if you’re like me or just trying to reduce the amount of dairy in your diet without sacrificing taste or texture, here’s my list of the best dairy–free alternatives that will sate your needs.

Daiya

This brand has undoubtedly stolen the crown as one of the best dairy–free products. Daiya has a variety of dairy–free food and also allergen–free and plant–based products.

Unfortunately, many of the most delicious dishes out there include dairy, and they just wouldn’t be the same without the creamy, melted cheese that goes with them. However, I’ve started using Daiya shredded mozzarella and cheddar in dishes like quesadillas and pasta, and you really can’t tell the difference, especially after it’s melted. Even if you’re only slightly intolerant to cheese, it’s worth trying this brand because it’s essentially just as good as regular cheese—and that’s a strong statement.

Their website also includes amazing cooking tips and recipes for dishes like nachos, bean dip, and pizza. It’s a trustworthy resource if you want to experiment with eliminating cheese from your diet. They even have an amazing mac ‘n’ cheese recipe, so all you’re losing is the stomach ache!

Nutritional Yeast

This one is definitely an unexpected choice of dairy substitute, but trust me when I tell you that it elevates your dishes; once you try it, it’ll definitely become one of your cooking essentials. Nutritional yeast is a type of deactivated yeast that comes in the form of yellow flakes or powder. It’s highly nutritious, as it has vitamins, minerals, protein, and antioxidants. It also supports the immune system and can strengthen your nails, hair, and skin.

Nutritional yeast has a nutty, salty, and savory flavor, making it the perfect substitute for cheese in your favorite pasta dish. You can also add it to any dish, really, to enhance the flavor and be more creative as a chef.

Additionally, one of my roommates taught me the best trick—sprinkle nutritional yeast on top of popcorn for an extra salty, umami kick. It also works as a great addition to vegan and vegetarian dishes. Don’t let the name turn you away, sprinkle away! (Sorry, I just had to throw that in!)

Miso Paste

This one isn’t technically a direct cheese substitute, but it gives dishes that mouth–watering salty flavor you may be missing if you can’t eat cheese. The paste is made from fermented soybeans mixed with salt, and it’s often mixed with other ingredients like barley or rice.

Miso paste doesn’t have nuts like many other non–dairy cheeses, so if you have any nut allergies, it offers that same creamy texture and savory flavor. Since it’s fermented, it also has probiotics that help your immune system and increase overall gut health.

Ghee

Ghee is a clarified butter made by heating butter and removing the milk solids—which makes it a perfect alternative to real butter. It’s simmered, and I love using it for baking and cooking, but it can really be used for anything. The best part is that it doesn’t require refrigeration, so you can just keep it out on your counter. Honestly, it tastes just like real butter to me.

These four dairy alternatives have been life savers for me. As I’ve said, I strongly believe in intuitive eating rather than a strict diet culture; these products allow you to enjoy all of the same foods and dishes that you’d normally indulge in, even if you still can’t fully resist participating in those Bachelor Monday cheese platters.

In all seriousness, I hope you try some of these substitutes and enjoy making and eating your next meal more than ever before!
