Mental Health Monday: Finding Time for Family

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Penn chapter.

Most of us spend our time caught up in the stress and rush of life at Penn. I’ve found that for me, the first things to get cut out of my day are calling my mom and going to the gym. Not that I ever really want to go to the gym.

But recently I have realized that when I lose touch with my family is affects all parts of my life. I feel a lot more like I’m floating… like I’m a lot less grounded. And no one loves me more than my mom. I went home for Easter on a whim this past weekend, and I didn’t even realize how much I had been missing the security and love that comes with being at home with my family. And not just because of my mom. I’ve realized, as I’ve gotten older that my relationships with my siblings takes more effort to keep up. I can’t just go and lay on my brothers couch and help him with his homework any more, and I find that something as simple as forgetting to respond to a text can lead to an unintentional week without talking.

So, starting this week, I am trying to talk on the phone with all of my immediate family members at least once a week. It brings me peace of mind, and grounds me at a school that is anything but grounding. I’ve come up with a short list of ideas of ways to keep up with my family:

1.     Phoning – because talking is so much quicker and more personal than texting

2.     Texting – because I cant always talk on the phone

3.     Facetiming – because seeing one another’s face adds so much to the conversation

4.     Writing letters – because letters are cute and who doesn’t love a pen-pal

5.     Sending packages – sending little gifts and notes is an easy way to share my life with them
