It seems like having acrylics applied is becoming the norm. I wear my natural nails, and have only ever tried fake nails. I think they can look beautiful, but find myself not willing to spend that kind of money, regularly, on the maintenance of my nails. If it’s worth it for you, you do you! I’m sure you and your nails are gorgeous.

But, if you’re like me, and would rather get good at doing your nails yourself, at home, this article is for you.

Shape

Nail shape comes down to personal preference. I use a metal nail file (you can find them at Shopper’s Drug Mart), because it’s very thin, and can get into tighter spots than a regular nail file can. Metal files also last longer without wearing away. I like to file my nails about twice a week. When shaping, I always file the sides, to make my nails as thin as possible. This gives the illusion that my nails and hands are longer than they actually are. I also (gently!) push my cuticles back with my nails, to elongate even more.

There are many popular shaping choices in circulation.

My favourites include almond, coffin, and squoval.

Colour

Again, this is totally up to you; they’re your nails! I love neutrals, all year long. A good nude will last you a long time and never go out of style. I like to have a semi-sheer nude, as well as an opaque nude on hand. A good topcoat is also a must. I like my nails to be as glossy as possible.

I recommend Essie (not sponsored; I wish!) because the quality is really good, the colours are long-lasting and there are so many colours to choose from, and they’re conveniently carried at most drug stores.
