The People You Must Befriend In College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

Sure there have been numerous “People you WILL meet in college” lists. But have you ever seen a “People you absolutely NEED TO BEFRIEND in college” list?

Whether you are an eager-faced froshie or a mature third-year, you have probably realized by now what a large number of people you end up meeting during your time at college. Who to befriend? Who to shun? Here is a list of people you HAVE to acquaint yourselves with while in college.

  1. First and foremost, a notes buddy. After a night of hard-core partying, when you stumble into that 9:00 AM class, regretting the day you registered for it, chances are that whatever the professor’s uttering is going to fly right over your hungover head. That’s where your note-buddy steps in. Some people just have the ability to take extensive written notes, with all the points clearly outlined. Better yet, are those people who thrust a recorder right next to the professor. Befriend them, take them out for coffee, then, when you need them the most, call in the favors.
  2. After that, what every college girl needs is another girl to party with! Yes. That girl. That girl who lives to party. You know her lifestyle is completely unhealthy, but you also know that once the sun goes down, she’s THE girl to party with. After all, who else knows where the best frat parties are at, which club has the cutest guys, or how to manage to still go to class the next morning after a late night out.
  3. The Computer Science major. Your go-to guy [or girl] for when computer fatalities occur. While all the technical aspects of your laptop may seem completely foreign to you, computer science majors are experts at this! This is their forte and they know this stuff like the back of their hands. Instead of going to your local computer shop and shelling out a few extra bucks, why not just pop in to see your old computer buddy? See if they can somehow fix that hardware problem you’re having.
  4. That person majoring in the same thing as you. Whether it’s Life Sciences or Humanities, it’s always comforting to know that you’re not alone and that you’re not the only one going through all this. This is someone who you can go to and talk about your future plans and they’ll actually understand!
  5. A photographer. Who else will document every moment in your life? Who else will make you look like a model in pictures or photograph those fun nights out with friends? Her. Or him. Either way, a photographer friend is necessary. Years after you graduate when you’re clicking through those old pictures, you’ll be thanking them for documenting such “important” memories.
  6. The incessant texter. Imagine this: you’re in the midst of a two hour lecture and the clock has no plans of speeding up anytime soon. Your Twitter and Facebook are dead and the only thing left to do is either play Angry Birds or just sit there, listening to your professor drone on and on about the social implications of the recent controversial United Colors of Benetton ad. What can you do? Whip out your phone and text that person who ALWAYS manages to text you back barely a minute later. Not only will they keep you occupied, it’s fun having conversations via texts! What they text you probably will not matter days or even hours from know. What does matter is that what he or she has to say will keep you occupied for the next hour or so. Or at least until the professor dismisses the class.
  7. A multilingual person. Two words: study aboard. The opportunity to go away to another country for the whole summer is an opportunity not to be missed. Don’t let language barriers act as a deterrent since all summer abroad courses are taught in English. A multilingual friend can help you survive in a foreign country for a whole summer and is basically a free translator and travel companion all rolled up in one! After all, you’re going to be going to be staying for at least three months, you might as well make the most out of it. Instead of stressing yourself out by trying to figure out what the locals are saying, soak up the country’s culture and leave the speaking skills to your multi-lingual friend!
  8. A stylish friend. Bonus points if she’s the same shoe size as you. Be extra nice to her since she might end up giving you that Versace blazer you saw the other day as an “I’m so glad we’re friends” present. With her by your side, you’ll never have to swipe that credit card again! But all sarcasm aside, girls generally love sharing clothes with their really good friends. So be extra friendly and you’ll soon find yourself looking at a whole new closet filled to the brim with the most outrageous designer pieces!
  9. The very determined individual. Chances are, this person is going to go on to be the next Obama or something. But that doesn’t matter now. This is the person you can talk to when the academic part of college life has become unbearably hard or when you’re seriously considering dropping out and joining forces with the homeless. Motivation by someone so determined is just the thing needed, at times, to keep us going and make us get out of our oh-so-comfy beds and try to make our childhood dreams come true. This very determined person is like your beacon of light. Follow it. Be inspired. Achieve.
  10. A bestie. Of course you need someone who’s going to be right alongside you whilst you’re up to all your shenanigans. While the nine people mentioned above are great people to hang out with from time to time, we all need that one shoulder to cry on when going through a really bad break-up, or that one person we can just talk to on and on and be completely understood, or maybe just someone who you need to spill your thoughts to from time to time. Besties are your therapist, personal shopper, soulmate, and sister all rolled up in one. This is the person who will end up being your bridesmaid someday. They’re the ones who’ll make you feel happy because after all, a best friend is one of the few people who will make everything seem worth it.

And there it is. The ten people you should really try to get know while your time at college. Now sit back and think, how many types of people mentioned in this list have you befriended so far…?

Natalie has recently completed her second year at the University of Toronto with a double major in History and Ethics, Society, and Law. She is excited to bring Her Campus to U of T and seeing it expand its presence in Canada. She is also active in the school's Model United Nations circles and numerous organizations off campus and is best described as a political and pop culture junkie. Born and raised in Toronto, she is blindingly proud of everything the city has to offer including the best school in the country, no matter what Macleans says, and its sports teams, no matter how many times they may lose or miss the playoffs.
