Fun, Easy Crafts for Christmas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Vic chapter.

Love crafts? Me, too. I love little handmade trinkets with their personal quirks and touches. I love making them, I love giving them to people as gifts. Basically, I just love crafts. And I love Christmas. So why not combine the two? If you’re into crafts as much as I am, check out the crafts below. They’re simple and easy to make, and they can make wonderful little gifts for the people you’re close to, or even just for yourself!

Bauble Ornaments

What you’re going to need:

  • Clear glass or plastic (I recommend plastic) ornaments
  • Anything little and Christmasy that you think can fit inside! Lights! Beads! Berries! Ribbons! A small gnome!
  • Glitter/opaque spray if you’re into that
  • Ribbon

What you’re going to do:

  • Pop off the metal end that holds the hook at the top of the bauble
  • Fill the inside of the bauble with the Christmasy things you’ve collected
  • Screw the top back on
  • Spray the outside with the glitter/opaque spray or leave it clear
  • Tie a little ribbon around the metal hook if you’d like

Ta-da! Cute ornaments

Snow Globes

What you’re going to need:

  • Clear mason jars or other clear, empty jars. You can find these at the craft store. Alternatively, you can use a wine bottle if you’re into that.
  • Christmas figures, lights, beads, ribbons, or other Christmasy things you’d like in your snow globe
  • Glitter/opaque spray
  • Glue gun
  • Ribbon

What you’re going to do:

This one is similar to the bauble ornament!

  • Take the top off of the jar and fill the inside with the Christmasy things you’ve collected. I’d recommend gluing any loose pieces to the bottom of the jar so that they don’t slip around if you decide to shake it like a real globe.
  • Pop the top back on
  • Spray the outside or leave it clear
  • Wrap the outside with ribbon if you’d like!

And there ya go, a handmade snowglobe!

Simple Wreath

What you’re going to need:

  • A foam wreath frame, or a plain wreath (you can find these at the craft store)
  • An assortment of Christmas bows, pine cones, ribbons, bells, or anything you’d like to see on a wreath
  • Glue gun

What you’re going to do:

  • Turn your glue gun on
  • Start gluing everything until the foam frame is covered, or you’re happy with how it looks

Ta-da! Simple, DIY wreath.

Cookie Cutter Ornament

What you’re going to need:

  • Plastic or aluminum cookie cutters in Christmas shapes
  • Cute cardstock or scrap booking paper
  • Craft glue (or use a glue gun if you’re feeling wild)
  • Yarn/Twine

What you’re going to do:

  • Trace the cookie cutters onto the paper
  • Cut out the shape, then using the craft glue (or glue gun, you crazy Christmas person, you), glue the paper to the cookie cutter
  • Fasten yarn or twine so that you can hang the ornament

You’re done! Isn’t it cute?

Cork Reindeer

What you’re going to need:

  • Corks
  • Pipe cleaner
  • Beads or googly eyes
  • Pom-poms (preferably red)
  • Glue gun
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors or a knife

What you’re going to do:

  • Begin by cutting one cork into four equal pieces
  • Cut another cork into two pieces, one piece being larger than the other
  • Glue the four small corks to another cork like table legs. These are going to be your reindeer’s legs (alternatively, you can poke pipe cleaners in as legs, although he may not stand up very well)
  • Glue the smaller piece of cork on top of the cork that will be the reindeer’s body. This will be the neck
  • Glue the last, larger piece of cork on top, becoming the head
  • Glue on the beads or googly eyes, and a pom-pom for his nose
  • Cut the pipe cleaner, then twist it into an antler shape. Repeat for the other antler. Glue to the reindeer’s head
  • Cut three more small pieces of pipe cleaner, gluing one to his back for his tail, the other two just behind his antlers for his ears
  • Tie the ribbon around the reindeer’s neck

Ta-da! And look at that little cutie.

Bell Bracelet

What you’re going to need:

  • An assortment of Christmas bells
  • Stretchy string/ribbon/yarn
  • Other little decorations or beads if you’d like

What you’re going to do:

  • Thread the bells along the string along with the extra charms or beads you may have
  • Tie off the end

Wear your new, jingly bracelet with pride!

Make a little village

What you’re going to need:

  • Little figures, greenery, and houses (either your own, a gnome, or whatever you find at craft stores)
  • A little area to display them
  • The reindeer you may have just made

What you’re going to do:

While not a traditional craft, it’s still fun to arrange the little Christmas village, even if it’s only a few figures!

  • Set up the little figures however you’d like
  • Place the reindeer around your display (if you made any)
  • And that’s it!

You can do these fun little crafts at home or get a group of friends together and have a craft night! They’re simple and fun, and soon you’ll be surrounded by fun little handmade Christmas items. And whether they’re gifts or just for you, you’ll have a great time making them. Enjoy!
