Finding a nail tech that won’t leave your vision high and dry is hardly an easy task, not to mention startling prices and tricky commute times can be a new kind of heartache. But that’s the beauty of this article finding you at the perfect time: If you’re looking for affordable, reliable nails—Victoria’s got your girl! Ava Lou, a first-year student at the University of Victoria (UVic), is offering gel extensions, manis, and removals at a starting rate of $35. Not to mention, she operates this side hustle right on campus! Her love for art started young, beginning with her passion for visual arts and drawing. Ava shares that when she picked up an interest in nail art, it quickly became her “main creative outlet.” So, naturally, a nail stylist was formed.
Ava began her journey in 2023 working as a receptionist in Squamish, B.C. at Cloud Nine Wellness Spa, a local woman-owned and run business. She built good relationships with her co-workers and boss, eventually being given the opportunity to get licensed to offer manicures. Within two months, she received the proper training, classes, and practical tests, ultimately obtaining her Nail Technology Certificate. Since Aug. 2023, Ava has been perfecting her style and is ready to build a clientele!
“I had a 10/10 experience with Ava! She was so receptive to my ideas and helped me create a vision that turned out to be the best set of nails I’ve ever had. She’s always so lovely to be around. I 100% recommend her.”

Ava is the perfect fit for the most creative minds. In an interview, she shared how nails are “like a mini canvas—I love doing nail art and I love bringing people’s ideas to life.” Her admiration of the creative process makes her an ideal fit for this collaborative work. As she puts it, “It’s not just me, it’s different in that way from traditional art, it’s more of a collaborative thing,” proving her respect for those she works with as equals in the process. Ava is dedicated to making the experience as smooth and rewarding as possible, embracing every opportunity to collaborate with imaginative minds.
Her prices currently have a baseline rate of $35, varying upwards based on design and style. As for scheduling, it’s quite simple! All you have to do is message her on her Instagram @nailsbyavalou to set a date and confirm the location. This on-campus artist is currently booking appointments until the end of the term and will continue with her private services in September if there is enough interest. If not, don’t worry—she’ll be available at one of Victoria’s salons soon enough!
Ava is reported to be incredibly kind and dedicated to her craft, so if you’re looking for someone to give your trust to for those perfect nails, UVic’s the place to be.
