Local Bands You Should Be Listening To

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Wyoming chapter.

Every town has some form of a local music scene and it just so happens that Laramie’s is AMAZING. I have found so many new bands and different genres of music to love, not to mention shows to attend in my free time. Listening to local bands and musicians is not only a great way to show your town and its talent some love, it’s also a great way to find some new tunes to cherish forever. As an avid music follower, I have compiled a list of local bands that you should check out if you haven’t yet so that you don’t have to look for it yourself. You can thank me later.

1)10¢ Stranger: Folk/Bluegrass

This band is the perfect mix of country, folk and bluegrass all in one. Featuring a stand-up bass, banjo and many other instruments, their songs are full of diverse sound. On top of that, the vocalists are amazing; every time I see this band perform I can only dream of being able to sing like them. The band just posted a Tiny Desk Contest entry on YouTube performing their song “Month of Sundays” so check it out and see for yourself. These guys are so talented and can be found on Facebook if you want to see when they’ll be performing next.

2) Elk Tongue: Psychedelic Desert Rock

This band is probably my favorite band in Laramie right now. The band composed of 4 members considers themselves to be psychedelic desert rock, providing plenty of fun tunes that are easy to dance to. They have an EP already out called “A Field Guide to Mammals” featuring 5 songs that can be listened to on BandCamp, which I will link below. Word on the street is that they’re working on an album, so look out for that if you end up loving them as much as I do.

3) Wynona: Alternative Rock

Wynona is one of the more popular local bands here in Laramie and rightfully so. The four-piece rock band has so many good tunes and are awesome live. They are also working on an album right now, so soon, we will have some new Wynona jams! If you want to check them out, they have their EP “Death is an Ocean” on their website that I’ll leave here for your listening pleasure.

4) Redbush: Rock

Another rock band from Laramie that everyone should check out is Redbush who just released their album “Gaslight Lockdown,” so there are plenty of new tracks that you can listen to. This band is so fun to watch live and I really enjoy their sound. If you can catch one of their shows around town, go and you won’t be disappointed. Until then, here’s a link to their BandCamp as well, where all their music can be found.

5) The Woodpile: Folk

The Woodpile is a newer band to the local scene, but you would have no idea when you listen to their music. What started as a solo project by the vocalist for the band, grew into what is now The Woodpile and they are so talented and also some really nice guys. Their music is definitely something I listen to when I study or when I just need a change of pace from my usual pop-punk playlists. They have only one EP out right now, but it can be found on Bandcamp, where some of their live music is also available for a listen. Check them out here:

6) Lowfaith: Post-Punk/Goth

I just saw this band live for the first time last weekend and had no idea who they were, but I’m glad I found out. The band is a lot harder than the rest of the ones on this list but I enjoy them a lot, so maybe you will too. Their songs are similar to what I listen to within my own music library, so I definitely found it easy to weave them into my usual playlists. They also have BandCamp, where some of their songs are available to listen to.

Though I could list amazing local bands forever, these are my favorites. Also, buying their music is a great way to show your support and send your love. So, if you enjoy one of the bands’ work, I suggest purchasing it to support your local music scene!
