Want to get involved in a club sport? Specifically, women’s rugby? If you’re unsure, here’s more information about the team and reasons to join.
Her Campus: Tell us about the rugby program:
Rugby Team Vice President: The women’s rugby program is a really supportive group of women that love the physical toughness of a sport like rugby.
HC: Who can join the team?
RTVP: The greatest thing about the team and about the sport in general, is that there is no “specific type” of person who can play. Anyone of any body size can play rugby, because there are so many different positions. There is a place for everybody on the field. As long as you are willing to try hard, and learn more about the sport, you will fit right into the team.
There is no experience needed to join our team, in fact, most everyone on our team now started out never having played before. It is fairly easy to learn and we have an abundance of great coaching to help rookies find their feet. In terms of why join rugby, I may be a little biased by thinking it is one of the greatest sports out there.
HC: Why join rugby?
RTVP: Rugby isn’t all about the physical toughness of the sport that people first think of when they hear about it. Rugby is about family. Anywhere that you go in the world, if you meet a fellow rugby player or rugby fan, you automatically have a friend. It is a huge support system that you know you can always count on, and that I believe is the most important reason why people should join rugby.
HC: What does the fall schedule look like?
RTVP: Our fall season is our more competitive season where we play 15’s and compete against other teams throughout Colorado and the west. Our schedule is not currently decided yet, but you can see our schedule on the Wyoming Women’s Rugby facebook page or on the club sports page through the university website.
HC: What’s the time commitment?
RTVP: The time commitment for practices is quite mellow. We usually practice 3 days a week in the indoor practice facility. This spring semester those hours are Sunday from 5:30-7:30, Monday from 7:30 to 9:30 and Thursday from 9:30 to 11:00. We encourage everyone to come out to practice and try it at least once!
HC: Where can people find more information?
RTVP: We have a great rookie program to work with newcomers one on one and help them learn a little more about the game. People can find more information about us on our Facebook page or the club sports page. They can also contact either us at the emails listed below!
