Taylor Swift’s Cover of Earth, Wind, and Fire “September” Faces Harsh Critism

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UAB chapter.

It seems like Friday 13th indeed became an unlucky day for megastar Taylor Swift after Twitter went into a frenzy when she released her cover of the famous September song the group Earth, Wind, and Fire. Her version of the song stripped away the funky beat and decided to slow it down adding a country flare to the cover.

Covering popular songs can be tricky for some artist; however, some artist covers have been successful such as Johnny Cash cover of the Nine Inch Nails song “Hurt” or Whitney Houston’s cover of “I Will Always Love You” which was originally sung by Dolly Parton. Others aren’t as successful, and Taylor Swift is one of them with some calling the cover “disrespectful”. People have joked and said that Maurice, the founder of Earth, Wind, and Fire is probably “rolling in his grave” from this cover.

Not everyone hates the Taylor Swift cover, in fact some are saying that people shouldn’t harass her over the song. One fan on Twitter tweeted that the cover of the song was “absolutely beautiful.” Writer Kelsie Gibson wrote an article for Popsugar defending the cover stating its “strangely reminiscent of Swift’s older country material.”

Personally, I prefer the original version of the “September” song by Earth, Wind, and Fire. I thought Taylor Swift taking away the classic funky beat of the song was a mistake, but if you want to see which  version of the song you like check out both of the songs below:
