An Open Letter to Those Going Through Finals

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UBC chapter.

Dear Students,

I hope this letter finds you well. We are approaching finals season: the most stressful and wonderful time of the year all at once. We are given so much information to process and constant reminders from our professors to “revise, revise, revise”. It feels eternal, yet also as though we are slowly running out of time. At times of desperation, we tend to procrastinate the most.

As classes are finalizing, it’s relieving we will soon be enjoying a short but sweet holiday vacation. I want to start off by reminding you that you’ve got this. The whole semester you’ve been loaded with pre-readings, assignments, practice exams, quizzes, midterms and class activities. All of these have helped you learn and revise in the past months.

Don’t be scared of finals. As intimidating and important as they are, you should show up to the examination room as confident as you can. If you put in hard work and effort, the exam should be the one fearing you. Brag to the piece of paper how much you have learned this past semester!

Many of you have lost hope already. Many finals are worth almost the entire course. This particular exam can define if you pass or fail a course. That’s true, however, go to the exam knowing you did all you could, nothing less. Study in groups, do the practice exams, watch YouTube videos, go over past assignments, read the pre-readings you never did – Just do it!

I encourage you to study hard, but take a break too. You won’t be able to work effectively if you are overdoing it. Remember that worrying too much wont change the outcome.

Last but not least, don’t give up. This shall pass soon. And remember, may the curve be ever in your favor.

Now go kill it.

With love,

    A fellow worried UBC student
