A SWEET LEGACY: WORKING AT YOGURT PARK

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

Like many other Cal freshmen, a pivotal moment in my GBO (Golden Bear Orientation) experience was waiting in the lengthy (but worthwhile) queue to try the iconic Yogurt Park. It is undeniable that the generous servings and endless topping combinations are irresistible, but the atmosphere is what stood out to me the most. The employees genuinely seemed eager to work and provide assistance, and the customers were just as joyful, even despite the long wait. So, when I began looking for a job in my second semester, applying to Yogurt Park was a no brainer.

By a twist of luck or fate, I was hired! As soon as I began working, it was evident that this establishment was not just a frozen yogurt shop, but so much more. The owner, Marty, first opened Yogurt Park back in 1977 and has been fully managing the shop alongside his son, Ryan, since then. Not only are they both some of the most diligent workers I have met, but I will truly carry the genuinity and support they have provided me far past my time in college.

The electric atmosphere and sense of community that has been fostered and upheld at Yogurt Park is truly unmatched. Upon starting the job, my coworkers quickly turned into some of my closest friends, as we bonded over busy closing shifts and memorable interactions with customers. Now, they are the first people I text when anything exciting happens to me, and our group dinner outings are one of my favorite parts of my Berkeley experience.  It has been so empowering to be surrounded with a group of people that are so unique from each other, but also collectively so supportive and inspiring.

Further, the customers that frequent Yogurt Park have taught me so much, whether it be about Berkeley, or life in general. There are customers who have been coming weekly or even daily since they attended Cal 20-30 years ago. It has been so heartwarming and entertaining to hear their college stories, and also learn about how much has changed since they left. Not only does Yogurt Park provide a wave of nostalgia for the customers, but it also serves as a simple and delicious way for them to reconnect with all of their fondest memories. These customer interactions truly have made me realize how special the opportunity to attend Berkeley is, and I hope I can look back on these days as fondly and adoring as they do.

I like to think that Yogurt Park will be around forever and ever, and I honestly have no doubt about it. This establishment has grown to not only be a vital part of a Berkeley student’s experience, but overall a Bay Area staple. There is something so indescribably special about a place that has been a constant throughout the history of a city as lively as Berkeley. Yogurt Park has been the destination for countless first dates, study snacks, and late night cravings over the span of almost 50 years, and hopefully many more to come. Being able to be a part of a place that is so rich in tradition and community has truly been one of my most treasured parts about my time at Berkeley. Who knew a cup of yogurt could do so much!?
