While Netflix’s projects have been a hit or miss, the dark teen comedy film Do Revenge has surpassed all expectations after its release on September 16. With impeccable wit and charm, the film delves into a modern teenager in a tale of revenge adorned with modern style and a striking color palette.

Do Revenge follows Drea Torres (Camila Mendes), a former queen bee at Rosehill Country Day who falls from grace after a sex video of her — intended only for her boyfriend, Max Broussard — is leaked, ruining her reputation. However, after meeting an outcasted Eleanor Levetan (Maya Hawke) who was slandered as a predator for being gay, the two come together in an unlikely friendship with a plan to get even with their enemies.

Despite a general lack of advertisement and promotion for the film, Do Revenge quickly soared to the number one spot on Netflix’s ‘Top Movies in the U.S. Today’ and has yet to leave the Top 10 as of publication. The attention and fame are rightfully deserved.

Hawke and Mendes have incredible chemistry together as Drea and Eleanor and it makes the film positively electric. Whether they’re bickering back and forth regarding their revenge plots or celebrating their victories together, the two actors have such vivid chemistry that it’s impossible to look away when their characters are together on-screen.

Beyond the riveting friendship between Drea and Eleanor, the film masterfully weaves a narrative full of betrayal, revenge and shocking plot twists. Do Revenge explores the tumultuous social hierarchy of Rosehill Country Day and enraptures the viewer, only to subvert expectations in the final arc of the narrative that is as shocking as it is satisfying.

Alongside an eclectic cast of characters, the film is bursting at the seams with engaging narratives and characters. Whether you’re interested in examining Max’s smug attitude shielded by his privilege as a rich white boy or the divinely sapphic storyline between Eleanor and Gabbi, Do Revenge has something for everyone.

If you’re looking for a film that is simultaneously stunning and hilarious to watch in your free time, Do Revenge is a must-watch modern take on the teen classics that once dominated the 2000s.
