Elizabeth Kopaskie: CalTV is UC Berkeley’s online television station that features shows in News, Sports, Entertainment, and Comedy. In addition to those on-camera departments, we also have three off-camera departments, Cinematography, Post-Production, and Business/Advertising/Marketing. Through our partnership program BROS (Bringing Resources to Organizations and Students)we also provide video services to on-campus organizations for a small fee and/or cross promotion. Our organization is finishing its eighth year and has grown from its original 10 members to more than 120 members. We’ve interviewed people ranging from Ron Paul to Jerry Brown to Ryan Reynolds, and our alumni have gone on to work at CNN, ABC News, NBC News, CAA(Creative Artists Agency), Disney, The Daily Show, and more.
HC: Why did you decide to join CalTV?
EK: I decided to join CalTV because I was interested in entertainment, marketing, business, and advertising, and I wanted hands-on experience in these areas so I could better gauge my abilities and narrow down my focus for the future. I also believed that CalTV was and is a great resource and creative outlet for students, so I wanted to get involved in the organization.
HC: What are some of you favorite CalTV videos?
EK: Some of my favorite CalTV videos include: Sh*t “Sh*t People Say” People Say, Pancakes and Booze, Back and Forth, and In Focus: Chancellor Birgeneau.
HC: What are the perks that come with being a part of CalTV?
EK: Some of the perks that I’ve found working with CalTV include: meeting some of my closest friends at Cal, gaining technical experience with our DSLRs and Final Cut Pro, and the opportunity to work with and learn about other on-campus organizations. We are also granted incredible access to openings, events, celebrities, and politicians.
HC: What are some of your plans next year?
EK: Next year I hope that CalTV becomes even more widely recognized for our quality content and hard work. As one of the incoming Co-Executive Directors, I hope to improve communication within CalTV while increasing our presence on campus. I hope to achieve these goals while also managing to write a thesis and maintain some semblance of a social life.
