Girl groups are dominating the K-pop scene right now. When I say dominating, I mean you can’t scroll through TikTok for five minutes and NOT encounter a popular K-pop song. Remember when “Cupid” took over your For You Page? Or did you recently hear a song along the lines of “I’m Super Shy, but I’ll Make You Mine” on your daily Instagram Reels doom-scroll? If you haven’t figured it out by now, that’s K-pop.
If you’re looking for a sign to get into K-pop, this is your sign! Luckily for you, I’m here to help. I have compiled a list of my top four favorite girl groups to date for you to focus your playlists on. Keep reading to learn what the K-pop community and the internet have been raving about:
1. NewJeans
As number one on this list, this group deserves your full attention. Even though this quintet only debuted last summer, I guarantee that they will be part of your quintessential K-pop playlist. Their Y2K aesthetic, honey-like voices, and entire 12-song career discography will have you waiting for more. My two top recommendations to start would be “Hype Boy” and “Super Shy.”
2. Le Sserafim
The name of the group is an anagram for “I’M FEARLESS” which tells you everything you need to know. Their songs are poignant, yet pack a punch. Additionally, their self-confidence shines through their songs so much that you will feel just like them before the song is over. My top two recommendations from them are “Antifragile” and “Sour Grapes.”
3. Blackpink
The pioneers of the girl crush concept in third-generation K-pop. Don’t let their small discography fool you. Their music packs a punch with powerful vocals and epic instrumentals. These girl bosses have shown time and time again that they belong on stage. To start, I recommend “Don’t Know What To Do” and “Lovesick Girls.”
4. Twice
Last but certainly not least, we have our girls, Twice. They are a tried and true staple of the K-pop world and they aren’t done yet. Their b-sides are absolutely to die for and their title tracks will have you singing along in no time. Bonus points if you start listening to their title tracks from oldest to newest. This will make you feel as if you’ve grown up with the group members and their musical style. My top two songs to start would be “Fancy” and “I Can’t Stop Me.”
Whatever genre of music you listen to, from rock to bossa nova, K-pop has music for everyone to enjoy. With these four K-pop girl groups to start, you’ll be a fan in no time.
