Mr. Campus Freshman: Jake O’Connor

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

Name: Jake O’Connor
Age: 18
Hometown: San Luis Obispo, CA

Her Campus: Where do you see yourself post-grad?
Jake O’Connor: Writing screenplays–and if we’re being honest here, there’ll be racks on racks on racks of cereal bowls, news-clippings, and a dog strewn across the floor. The kind of dog that cuddles.

HC: What do you look for in a girl?
JO: I don’t have a type–but they’re pretty: elegant features, slender ankles, divine hands. Here’s the deal, they don’t all look one way, but they all give me the same feeling. If you want to know what style, I love fashionable girls. But I stick by this: my favorite outfit on a girl–ever–is jeans and a t-shirt, literally a t-shirt, one with sleeves like boys wear. Some critics say you can’t “look for this” in a girl, but I want a girl that is going to love me like I love them. I always fall harder.

HC: What’s your favorite childhood memory?
JO: My mom and I played this demented version of hide and seek, where the goal was to scare you to the point where your heart stopped. She was hiding on my top bunk, I was six and apparently hadn’t learned to look upwards, so I couldn’t find her. She leans over the edge and screams, then I scream and see my life flash before my eyes.  She dies laughing and falls off the top bunk. Then we collapse on each other and laugh some more.

HC: What’s your idea of a perfect date?
JO: I’ll tell you this–that date would hold its own against any movie you can think of: The Notebook, The Graduate, Twilight, or whatever. I think in terms of the cinema, so the perfect date, in a sentence, is unscripted movie gold.

HC: What extracurriculars are you involved with and why?
JO: I’m in the film club on campus, had a quick elope with two club teams, but got cold feet and quit. I’m also in FSBC–basically a business club for Haas fans.

HC: What’s your favorite part about college so far?
JO: My mom’s telling me I grow up more every day. I like making her happy. I love my friends-you know what let me list them, because they’re my favorite part about college. Well, you know who you are.

HC: What’s the last song you played on your iPod?
JO: Hahaha, this is great. Okay it’s “Dreams” by J Cole. That’s because my ex-girlfriend called me and told me this song is me. And she’s right, my roommate and I collapsed while listening to it because of sheer accuracy.

HC: What’s your favorite pick up line?
JO: A lot of people think diamonds are the hardest thing on earth–have you felt my abs. But if that doesn’t work, I work dirty dancing into the conversation, but that’s only when I’m feeling crazy stupid in love for a girl.

HC: What’s your favorite place to eat around Berkeley?
JO: Crossys. Do you have any idea how much I laugh at those tables. We spend 2 hours a meal in tears.

HC: If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
JO: X-ray vision. Cause I’m freaky like that.
