We’ve all had those moments of staring blankly at our to-do list and feeling like scrolling through TikTok is a much better way to spend our time. However, it isn’t, but it’s at least a far more entertaining option than starting a five-page paper. Thus we procrastinate. I’m definitely not speaking from experience.
Yet despite how appealing that may sound, it doesn’t make the pile of work waiting to be done go away, and, as nerve-wracking and dull as tackling that work can be, I’ve learned some tips and tricks that help kick procrastination to the curb.
1. A GOOD SOUNDTRACK
If you’re anything like me, music is one of the critical things needed to get into a focused headspace. It’s not just any music, though, as sometimes, there are times when someone singing can disrupt my train of thought. Plus, I can’t listen to just my random array of liked songs on Spotify, as it’ll only lead to me constantly checking my phone to change the music, getting distracted, and procrastinating even further.
My go-to genres for working are classical music, jazz, bossa nova, or creating a playlist of those genres in order to help me not skip every two songs. Whatever genres work best for you will be the soundtrack to your success.
2. prioritize what’s most pressing
As easy as having a simple to-do list may seem, it doesn’t help complete the tasks, and looking at all you need to do can be overwhelming. While many might opt for the tasks on the list that can be achieved quickly, it might not be the assignment with the most pressing deadline.
What helps me get into the working mood is making my to-do lists based on what’s most important and prioritizing my work based on deadlines. That way, I can start with the work that’s the closest to being due. Plus, as I complete each task, I’ll know that it’s actually lightening my workload. It’s one thing to finish something due in a week while still having something unfinished to complete in an hour. The sooner you are done, the better you’ll feel.
3. put your phone away
I’ll admit that I don’t follow this tip as often as I should, but it works like a charm when I do. Sometimes, just putting my phone up on my bunk bed is enough for me not to get up and check it every five seconds, especially when I get into the zone. Your notifications can wait; your assignments can’t. Plus, the feeling of using my phone after I’m all done working is pretty rewarding.
4. a clean, stable environment
A cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind. Before starting any work, ensure you’re working where a stray crumb or stain won’t bother you or where loud noises will disrupt your focus. If you want to go the extra mile in finding the perfect working space, head to one of the many libraries on campus! I find that they’re ideal places to work. Plus, while at a library, you don’t have to resist the temptation of your wonderful, comfortable bed.
5. a reward!
As mentioned before, whether it’s regaining access to your phone or grabbing a sweet treat, rewarding yourself for all your hard work can be one of the key motivators and defeat procrastination altogether. Especially with Berkeley’s workload, it doesn’t hurt to occasionally pat yourself on the back with some boba or a tasty pastry. We all deserve something good.
Above all else, taking care of your body and mind is one of the best ways to do efficient work. That means taking breaks, staying hydrated, and stretching every so often. Taking periods away from work also helps me the most. It’s vital to remember that the time you spend working doesn’t directly correlate to what you get done. We must give ourselves grace and listen to what our body needs. No assignment in this world is worth not taking care of yourself.
