Radiolab at Zellerbach Hall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Berkeley chapter.

Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich of Radiolab

Radiolab is a radio program broadcasted to public radio stations all over the United States.  The show is hosted by Macarthur “Genius” Award-winning radio producer, Jad Abumrad, and NPR science reporter, Robert Krulwich.  Their show breaks down seemingly complex scientific theories and makes them accessible and easy to understand for broad audiences.  They’ve done segments on Parasites: can they be good for you?; Zoos: What’s with our need to be “close with the wild?”; and War of the Worlds: the power of mass media to create panic.

On November 3 and 4, Radiolab came to UC Berkeley at Zellerblach Hall and put on an innovative show about what it’s like to be “In the Dark.”  Through stroytelling, comedy, music, and dance, Abumrad and Krulich took the audience through the evolution of the eye and the development of sight, stories from an astronaut who traveled in space, and the two very different perspectives of two blind men.

Guest performances included comedic relief by Demetri Martin, musical pieces by Thao Nguyen, and dance numbers by Pilobus.  Nguyen stole my heart with her orginal sound and upbeat rhythm. Check out a video of her singing her hit song, “Bag of Hammers” here:

All in all, seeing Radiolab was a pleasurable experience and I can’t wait until they’re back in town. Until then, I’m happy to tune into their latest podcasts here.

(Inside Zellerbach, members of the audience were given LED lights to shine inside the auditorium to simulate the stars in space)
