As a seasoned rom-com watcher, I consider myself an expert in the category. My experience spans from the trashiest Netflix originals to award-winning films. I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, and I’ve questioned the two hours of life I could never get back. Now, I present my personal recommendations for the top 10 movies you should be watching this Valentine’s season.
If you’re feeling nostalgic: When Harry Met Sally is a classic example of a serendipitous slow burn. A friends to lovers trope with the late 70s setting in Chicago and New York ties everything together perfectly. Clueless is another amazing watch that still delivers in nostalgia, but with a more lighthearted coming-of-age feel and a glimpse into teenage culture in the 90s (or at least Beverly Hills teens).
If you consider yourself a “realist”: He’s Just Not That Into You incorporates some multiperspectivity, showing the same story from the views of different characters that all weave together (similar to the famous Love Actually). It’s very much related to the whole “if he wanted to, he would” concept. 500 Days of Summer takes things a step further, and acts as more of a commentary on love and its misconceptions.
If you’re a fantasy/adventure lover: The Princess Bride is a tale that weaves together romance, adventure, action, and some of the most iconic quotes. This can be considered more of a fairytale-esque romance.
If you’re more into “rom” over “com”: Pride and Prejudice (2005) is actually a period film set in early 1800s England. It’s an adaptation of the Jane Austen novel, and follows the relationship between outspoken countrywoman Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, a rich, aristocratic landowner. The pacing is definitely on the slower side, but it contributes to the development of the romance between the two main characters.
If you’re more into “com” over “rom”: She’s the Man is based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and incorporates all the hilarious confusion in it with a modern-day twist. Crazy, Stupid, Love similarly contains a series of comedic twists and turns, and uniquely follows the love story of a middle aged dad (played by Steve Carrell).
My personal favorites: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days has all the elements of early 2000s golden age rom-coms. It hilariously tackles the stereotypical “overly needy/obsessive” girlfriend character, while also developing a romance amidst the tangled web of lies and secrets (I won’t spoil any further). The 10 Things I Hate About You is my all time favorite movie, so honestly I have nothing more to say except watch it and thank me later.
This esteemed collection of cinematic gems promises to ignite the Valentine’s spirit, whether enjoyed alone or shared with loved ones. Embrace the magic with these unforgettable films.
