As the world stood still and turned their eyes to the 2012 Olympic
games in London, I too sat with fellow UCI students that I befriended
during my year as an exchange student from Sussex University.
Nestled on the sofa of my London based living room, we sat with our eyes glued
to the tv screen, watching the quirky opening ceremony. I remember Queen
Elizabeth descended down from a helicopter and was escorted by a nonchalant
“James Bond” . We shared a toast of sparkling wine and contentedly watched on,
as history began to unfold in my very own home town.
The 2012 London Olympics 2012 United the globe under a common theme of
remarkable sporting talent. An entirely voluntary group of regular
citizens transformed the Olympic Stadium into a historical remembrance
to be reckoned with. from the West Indian migration (Windrush), to the
celebration of England’s public healthcare (NHS), Mr. Bean and the world
renowned Beatles, everything was thought of by the progressive
producer Danny Bolye.
With the help of Beckham, the Olympic flame now burned brightly perhaps
symbolic of the passion of potential young Olympian gold medalists.
With America and China battling it out to dominate the medal table, I
was lucky enough to move from the sofa to the stadium on “Super Saturday.”
The buzzing crowd of 80,000 keenly anticipated one man who would
drastically change the score board. Hurdling as the fasted man in the
world, the name Usian Bolt was on everyone’s lips. He was truly inspiring,
Making me want to dig out thoes old “sneakers” and hit the UCI track!
