There are a million reasons why I joined the Greek life, and everyday I find a new reason why I love my sorority. When I rushed, I noticed how many girls were unsure of the idea of Greek life, and if it was really something they wanted out of their college careers. I never understood why they wouldn’t, because I always knew it was something I wanted to be part of.
The stereotypes that the media labels sorority girls with fail to represent a realistic look at the lives of Greek women, which is perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions about Greek life. There are so many benefits to joining a sorority: it will make you the best version of yourself, and the benefits that come with joining Greek life will follow you throughout life. If you have ever considered going Greek, here are five reasons why you absolutely should.
1. Sisterhood
The biggest reason why people choose to go Greek is the amount of friends they will make. Bonding with your sisters is the best part; you will support each other during the good times, and the bad. You will watch each other grow and mature into the women you want to be. It can be especially hard to find a sense of belonging and community in college, but joining Greek life is the easiest way to find a community, not only for your short-lived college years but also for life.
If you want to do more than just attend classes, join something that is so much more than yourself, an organization that allows you to share a bond with those who came before and after you. They don’t call them sorority sisters for no reason; these women will spend some of your most incredible moments in life with you; it will become your home away from home.
2. Leadership
There are so many opportunities to get involved when you join Greek life. You can hold a position in your chapter, which is also a great resume booster, and will give you transferable skills to use in the workplace such as public speaking, people skills, and organization skills. Even if you don’t hold a position in your chapter there are other options as well, such as intramural sports, philanthropy, and generally as leaders on and off campus. Watching your sisters’ accomplishments and determination to succeed in school and in life will inspire you and ultimately make you determined to become the best version of yourself too.
3. Education
Most people who are poorly informed about Greek life don’t realize how important academics are to sororities. They are not just about being a social group (although they do love to be social). Some sororities require a certain amount of study hours based on GPA. Also, GPA is a largely competitive aspect of Greek life because having a higher cumulative GPA makes your sorority more appealing and more likely to gain Greek awards. Your sorority will push you to do better in your classes by rewarding you for good grades, but also by helping you realize when you need to focus more on academics if your grades drop by putting you on probation (not allowing you to go to social events) until you are able to bring up your GPA. You also gain tons of study buddies, because you are always bound to have sisters in your classes to help you through those long nights of studying before an exam.
4. Social
One of the perks of being a sorority girl is that there is literally always something going on, you will never run out of things to do. There will be mixers and themed parties where you can dress up and take cute pictures with your sisters and have fun meeting other Greeks. Being in a sorority will help you get out of your shell. You will have some of the best nights of your life going out with your sisters and you will get to be your true self around them, because as you begin to see them as your equals, you can also let loose.Â
5. Future
You will develop so much as a person when joining a Greek organization. You will be pushed out of your comfort zone and enriched by every activity and aspect of Greek life. You will develop into a strong and confident woman: girl power is a serious matter here. Sorority women empower one another and gain the ability to fend for themselves and follow their dreams to do exactly what they want in life. Sororities will also open doors for your future through networking. You will develop high standards in your academic and social life, since excellence is the highest standard in a sorority. These women will stand by you and will encourage you to live to your greatest potential. You will find a shoulder to cry on, meet your future bridesmaids, and gain friends for life.
