I’ve always been a firm believer in reading the book before seeing it on the big screen. In honor of the new movie, Everything, Everything starring Amandla Stenberg (who notably played Rue from The Hunger Games) and Nick Robinson (who notably played Zach from Jurassic World) release on May 19th, I decided to read the book first. The new movie was actually a young adult book by Nicola Yoon, that was released in 2015.

If you are interested in reading the book I strongly advise against watching the trailer first because I felt like the trailer gave Everything, Everything away (lol puns). But what I will say in non-spoiler fashion, from the look of the trailer the adaptation looks pretty faithful to the novel and this young adult(YA) book was super cute and addictive.

Here’s a quick premise of the book:

My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

This book was adorable and addictive. I read the book in 2 sittings, it was relatively short and also had really cute doodles and illustrations that moved the story along. I also loved how the couple was an interracial couple, which you don’t see a lot of in young adult fiction. The plot I found to be kind of predictable, just because I read a lot of YA fiction, but I thought the characters really made the book for me. There were moments in the book I definitely swooned over and it’s definitely worth a read. Will the movie be faithful to the book? From the trailer it seems almost like an exact adaptation so maybe the movie will be just as great as the book.
