How to Fall Back into School

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Irvine chapter.

Remember when the first day of school consisted of fresh new clothes, crayons, pencils and perfectly made lunches? Those days helped us transition from summer to the school year (with the push of our parents to get us out of bed). Those days are far behind us as we have to transition from the carefree days of summer to the hectic world of the 10-week quarter. Instead of freaking out about how to transition constantly, here are some tips to help you bounce back to the sophisticated and star student.

Clothes
Face it–the dog days of summer are over. This means no more wearing your swimsuit underneath your clothes all day. No more dressing for the beach, it is time to dress for class. Rather than completely neglecting your summer wardrobe, you can still incorporate your summer pieces into your fall wardrobe. For example, pair a cardigan with one of summer dresses and you just changed the vibe of your outfit.

In addition, fall means cozy sweaters, scarves, boots, and more neutral colors. To spice up your fall wardrobe, you can add a scarf like this to your simple tee.

Supplies

Back in elementary school, I used to love going back-to-school shopping for new crayons, pencils, rulers, and pencil boxes. Those days are long gone, and my school supply list heavy-duty, expensive books have replaced my more carefree, colorful school supply list. There really is not a way to avoid buying textbooks so it is important to purchase them as soon as possible. And here is the most important part of buying your new textbooks – read and utilizethem. You spent $100 on that Introduction to Biology so wouldn’t it be smart to actually read that book? Another tip to get ready for back to school is to keep up on date with your readings from Week 1 so you will not be stressing about it later on.

Besides your textbooks purchases, make sure to buy an agenda planner or if you are lucky, use the one that your housing complex has provided. With your agenda planner, write down when assignments are due when you receive your syllabus for each class. If you are lucky, use the nifty stickers to help you stick to your school obligations.

Attitude

With your new clothes and supplies, transiting from summer to fall is made easier. But the important thing that is needed to fully adjust is the attitude. It may take awhile to have the school attitude but try working on it when you take your first steps on campus (that means actually going to class). While you’re in class, think of how you can succeed in the class rather then logging on Facebook and complaining how summer has ended.

In addition to going to class, try to become re-acquainted with your favorite study spot…I’m sure you missed spending countless hours there. Once your back there, it will seem like school has never left your mind.

With new clothes, supplies, and the school attitude, you can easily bounce back to your school self that was left behind in June. Get ready for another year of success and adventures. Zot! Zot!
