Stupid Cupid: Valentine’s Day for Singles

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Irvine chapter.

You stand there, eyes locked on the couple to your right as baby Cupid floats above their heads, throws you a mischievous wink, and shoots his gold-headed arrow right into their bottom. Your heart begins to race and your stomach feels like a cage of butterflies as you anxiously wait for him to turn your way. Cupid eyes you once more, teasing you with his glance, but fails to inspire romance on the very day of Valentine’s. He is gone. You find yourself puzzled and alone, just standing there, your eyes still locked on the couple to your right.

Now take a step back from this stereotypical perspective and realize that just because stupid cupid has stopped picking on you doesn’t mean that you can’t celebrate Valentine’s Day as a single lady! After all, we have a lot of fun! If being single on this day brings you down and if you find yourself sitting in front of the television, watching a sappy love story with a tissue in one hand and a box of chocolates in another, I advise you to wipe that chocolate stain from your lips and let your single side kick in! I have compiled a list of things to do on Valentine’s Day for us single ladies out there!

1. Pamper Yourself! – With all that free time to dedicate to yourself, why not show the person you love the most how important you are? There’s no harm in treating yourself to a box of chocolates – all in the right circumstances of course!

2. Girls Night IN– This year, my roommates and I are going to have a Valentine’s Day dinner at our apartment, decorations and food à la us. Think about how long the wait will be for most restaurants and how packed the movies and shopping malls will be with lovestruck couples. If seeing couples out on Valentine’s Day isn’t your cup of tea, just have a night in with your gals and enjoy a home-cooked meal and a sexy James Franco on the TV!
3. Spark Some Romance – Hoping for something romantic to happen? Then make it happen! Dress for the occasion and go out to the nearby pub with a group of close girls. There’ll be many single guys there, so go on the prowl and enjoy!

4. Secret Valentine – Just like Secret Santa, gather your close friends and get each other a few treats for V-Day! You can go all out with the gifts, or get them something symbolic.
5. Go All Out! – The expectation of Valentine’s Day for couples is to do something romantic, something you wouldn’t do on a regular day. Whereas for singles, you can go out with a few of your single girls and do something totally outrageous! Something out of the ordinary, like a hot air balloon ride (the one at Orange County Great Park is perfect!), dirt bike riding, or even mechanical bull riding!
Just because you don’t have that “special someone” beside you just yet, doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate Valentine’s Day as a single collegiettetm! Happy Lovin’!
