5 Lessons From Taylor Swift

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

In the past few years, the media and fans have become enamored by the music of Taylor Swift.  Lately the relationships that inspire her music have become as equally as popular, if not, making her more famous than relying on the success of her music alone. Recently, there was a lot of buzz about her short-lived romance with One Direction’s Harry Styles. Not only because he was in a popular boy band, but she called it quits with former flame Connor Kennedy a month before. At that point, many people were questioning her motives and were curious to know if she was only dating Styles as a publicity stunt. The media can say whatever they want about the girl, but above all this we can learn some valuable things about life and love from her.

1. Make money off the pain

One thing that Taylor is really good at is tapping into her emotions and writing incredibly relatable songs. Instead of just crying over a breakup, she writes a song about it! She’s no dummy; in fact it is kind of a brilliant of her. Instead of feeling solely heartbroken and eating tubs of ice cream, might as well make yourself a little money to ease the pain right?

2. Never reveal who the song is about, in fact don’t even hint it

Most girls in the initial breakup stage can agree with this and think “if only I can get back at him somehow and call him out on what he’s put me through!” After the release of her latest album Red, it often seemed like this was the motive in the majority of her songs. What set her apart in the beginning of her career was the fact that she would often hint to her fans through lyrics about who she had written the song about. On her albums she inscribes further hints within the lyric books of her CDs, almost as if to confirm her fans’ speculations. Considering that Taylor is aware of the public’s interest in her love life, adding in these “hidden messages” no longer looks classy on Taylor’s part. Pulling a move like that is the equivalent to posting suggestive lyrics or a Facebook status about an ex boyfriend, when everyone knows you just changed your status from “in a relationship” to “single” a day ago. C’mon Tay we love you, but by singling your exes out like that it sounds like you are still into them.

3. After a breakup, step up your game to scorching hot mode.

Did anybody else see Taylor at this years People’s Choice Awards? She looked amazingly stunning in her white, vixen-like, low cut dress from the Ralph Lauren Collection (pictured below). Most say the wardrobe choice had a lot to do with the fact that it was her first public appearance since her breakup with Harry Styles. By wearing what the media has deemed her “revenge dress”, she proved an old testament to still be well alive and true, after every breakup you have got to let him know what he is missing out on.

4. Its ok to have a little me time.

This is more of a lesson of what Taylor has failed to do, and how girls should not follow in her example. Taylor has given herself the reputation of being a serial dater and the problem with this is sometimes when you are constantly in relationships you tend to forget who you are as a person just because you have always had someone by your side.  Now that her relationship with Harry Styles has ended, being on her own could be healthy for Taylor at this point. In fact, maybe a few songs about the average single gal on Taylor’s next album could be a little refreshing.

5. Despite it all, never give up on love

It has been reported that she has dated 13 guys in the past four years, you would think the girl may be a little pessimistic with the idea of love, yet Tay remains hopeful in finding that happy ending that we all hope to have. It’s an admirable trait that she has because even though she writes songs like We are Never Ever Getting Back Together, she is never afraid to Begin Again.
