Apple’s Journal App is My New Favorite Thing

Last month, Apple released a new app called “Journal” with the iOS 17.2 update. I’ll admit I was skeptical at first– I’ve been journaling on paper and occasionally my laptop for years, so having a separate journaling app felt like an unnecessary addition. What could another convoluted app have to offer me? After seeing all the features of Journal, though, I’m completely sold on trying it out.

The most basic form of a Journal entry is similar to any note on your phone; you just pull up a blank sheet and start typing away. However, the app also goes out of its way to spark ideas for you. In the “Recommended” section, you can find the beginnings of potential entries generated for you, including pictures of specific people and outings with encouragement to describe how they make you feel.

Journal also provides a variety of writing prompts that promote mindfulness and gratitude. These refreshable prompts encourage you to reflect on what has brought you joy recently, identify things you are grateful for, and practice self-compassion. There are also more lighthearted prompts, such as: “What’s the last thing you cooked?” I love the blend of recalling old memories, ranting about current happenings in my life, and looking towards the future.

My absolute favorite feature is the ability to add voice recordings to your entries. I can always print out pictures and google writing prompts for my current journal, but being able to hear my thoughts narrated is something I couldn’t do before. Like many people, I’ve always offhandedly wondered what it would be like to have a podcast, and it’s fun to live that out even if I’m the only one who will hear my unorganized thoughts.

I think it’s time we collectively say goodbye to the notorious unorganized Notes app vents. I’m excited to start 2024 with this new way to get to know myself better. Whether you’re a long-time journaler or have barely touched the hobby in your life, I’d encourage you to give Journal a try. You might learn more about yourself than you’d expect.
