Wallows’ new single “Quarterback” was just released and has stirred up quite the reaction from fans, including myself. As I played the song for the first time I had noticed something was slightly different within the first few lyrics and I thought “Wait, Dylan sounds a bit different here.”
To my surprise, as the chorus began, I realized it was drummer, Cole Preston, taking the lead and having his solo singing moment on the track.
Cole Preston to Wallows is like the Ringo to The Beatles or Kevin to The Jonas Brothers. The more reserved, quiet band member has surprised us Wallows fans with his preppy vocals over an 80s sound style with the synth and upbeat rhythm. Nonetheless, “Quarterback” seemed like a mixture of the group’s entire discography and had elements that were similar to their songs on their album Nothing Happens and their single “OK.”
The theme of reminiscing over an old lover or ex is evident as Cole harmonizes in its catchy pre-chorus:
“You said “I’ll be alright”
I knew by the look in your eyes
But anytime you want you know I’ll be the one
Do you feel the same or was it just for fun?”
Although Wallows has become one of my favorite bands in recent years, I was not the biggest fan of their newest EP: Remote which came out in 2020. Most of the songs on the EP sounded a bit “too pop” and electronic for me, as I was used to their more indie-rock style from their previous album and singles. However, I do admire and applaud them for becoming more experimental with their music and the songs off the EP I enjoyed were “Dig What You Dug” and “NGMLY.”
Wallows is said to release a deluxe version of their Remote EP on February 19th, so I’m definitely eager to listen to the additional songs. Overall, I’m thrilled to see what is in store for Wallows and their future musical endeavors, and I’m hoping that Cole is able to take the lead once again in upcoming songs.
