It’s only been a few weeks since we first started school and the schoolwork has already started piling up. You need a breather and what better way to relax than with a warm cup of tea and some Netflix on the side? Here are five shows with amazing leading ladies that will help you tap into your inner girl power and get you through those stressful weeks ahead.

1.       New Girl

This show is gold. If you’ve seen the show, you know what I’m talking about. Zooey Deschanel takes the lead as Jess, a quirky yet sophisticated teacher living with a house full of guys. Now entering its third season, New Girl has proven to be one of my favorite shows with female leads that know how to get the job done. Check it out Tuesday nights at 9pm on Fox.

2.       The Mindy Project

You may know her as Kelly Kapoor from The Office (gone too soon!)Writer/Producer Mindy Kaling plays a smart and witty obstetrician who is trying to navigate her way through a hectic and hilarious personal life. And talk about girl power!  Mindy is the first South Asian- American woman to headline her own network television show. Season 2 episodes air Tuesday nights at 9:30pm on Fox, right after New Girl!

3.       Scandal

Shonda Rhimes has done it again. If you like Grey’s Anatomy, then you’ll love Scandal. Kerry Washington plays Olivia Pope, a former White House Aid who lives and breathes problem solving. And did I mention she’s sleeping with the President? If you’re not already watching Scandal I suggest you catch up and watch Seasons 1 and 2. Trust me, it’s worth it. Catch the new Season 3 episodes Thursday nights at 10pm on ABC!

4.       Orange Is The New Black

In this Netflix original, Taylor Schillings plays Piper Chapman, a not-so clean cut bride-to-be who ends up in the women’s state prison. Her journey behind bars and the stories of her fellow inmates makes for a compelling storyline. Besides a few minor male characters, the cast is full of talented women. While we patiently wait for Season 2 to arrive, catch up with Season 1 on Netflix. Once you start, you won’t be able to hit pause.

5.       Girls

Lena Dunham is a well-known New Yorker and star of HBO’s Girls. Some call it the new age Sex and The City. Girls follows the life and times of four friends living in the big apple. They deal with any and everything you can imagine, from working and interning, to the never-ending guy drama. Dunham is also the creator and writer for the show. Season 3 is still in the works, so catch up with Girls on HBO.com

Enjoy!
