My teenage self would be shocked to know that I rarely wear mascara these days. After all, mascara was the first makeup product I ever got into as a freshman in high school. It’s a product that’s so simple to use and can make such a drastic difference, how can you ever give it up?
It’s only natural for one’s makeup routine to change with them as they grow up. When I was younger, I thought makeup was an all-or-nothing type of thing. While I had become more interested in makeup with basic items like the Physicians Formula mascara and Burt’s Bees tinted chapstick, for a long time I couldn’t imagine a look to be complete unless I had every single product I liked on my face at once.
What I have learned recently is that makeup products can be used together but they don’t always have to. If I don’t want to wear mascara but I want to do my eyebrows and add blush, it’s not going to absolutely kill the look. And favorite products I once loved might not be favorites forever. Others I once hated might become my new go-to products. I used to hate how blush looked on me until I found out the right placement for it. Now I’m obsessed with it and I’d choose it over mascara any day.
I might not have been able to predict it years ago, but these small adjustments in my makeup routine have been welcome occurrences. Makeup is a wonderful form of self-expression and a great tool to feel a little more put-together some days. As a result, embracing the changes can be fun and personally fulfilling. I’m so glad I decided to switch up how I do my eyebrows with the Glossier Boy Brow and discovered that, yes, sunscreen is incredibly important to put on before anything else. Makeup relates to a lot more than just glamorizing features on your face, and it is essential that it go hand in hand with caring for your skin and body as well.
As someone in their twenties, I definitely view makeup differently than I did even a few months ago. My thoughts have shifted alongside my routine, and I know that will continue into the future.
