Sh*t That Matters: Post-2020 Presidential Election

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UC Riverside chapter.

This election has been nothing but stressful, it’s as if the whole world is listening closely as Nevada patiently counts their votes. We hear talk of Trump wanting to sue and stop voting, we hear Biden has broken a voter record, but we’re not hearing an end time for when we will know who has won. No matter who the president turns out to be, however, you should not stop fighting. Here’s only a couple of the many movements we can’t forget about after the 2020 presidential election:

Kids in Cages

If you didn’t know, Trump was placing immigrant families who attempted to cross the border into cages and then separated the children from their parents with what he called his “Zero-Tolerance” policy. He was later pushed to stop through immigration activists and the United Nations, but he made it extremely difficult for the parents of those children to reunite. There are still 545 children unaccounted for. Biden campaigned that he would fight to reunite and bring justice to the events happening there if elected president, but we need to make sure we hold him accountable if he is elected, or we need to prevent Trump from continuing acts like those if re-elected.

 Black Lives Matter

What is debated to be known as the second civil rights movement started with the unlawful murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. Police brutality and unlawful treatment has been more prevalent among black communities than most; it is an issue that does not cease, no matter the outcome of the election. We need to continue to push policies into office like the BREATHE Act which would “[redirect] federal funds away from police, prisons…and into underserved communities of color”, along with continuously electing more representation like Cori Bush who became the first Black womxn to represent Missouri in Congress.

Womxn’s Right to Their Body

Trump recently appointed Amy Coney Barrett to the supreme court which has been a big topic of debate because she will have the opportunity to overturn Roe v. Wade, a federal case that has protected a womxns right to an abortion. States like Louisiana that have foreshadowed the overturning of Roe V. Wade have already implemented an amendment that states that they would not protect a womxns right to an abortion. Whether Trump or Biden win’s we have to keep fighting against policies such as Louisiana’s; a womxns body should not be up for debate by any man. It is a womxn’s individual right.
