This year I got to be part of the exec team behind Greek recruitment—I got to be a Rho Gamma. This means that rather than being one of the girls who recruit new members, I would be one of the girls who help the recruits find the chapter of their choice. The type of advice that I would give people as a rho gamma can differ from that of a chapter member. The main difference between this advice is that as a rho gamma, I am more focused on new members and helping them make the decision. As a chapter member, I would have a slight bias and help the girls choose a chapter, but I would want them to choose mine more than others. Although some things might be similar, I don’t have a bias for a new member to choose my chapter, but would rather help them find their chapter!
Be True To Yourself
This might seem like something obvious to do, but in reality, once you see all those girls, you might try to change yourself for them. Every chapter is very different and so meeting everyone might be a little scary at first. But by being true to yourself you will find a chapter that you will genuinely love for life!
Have an Open Mind
This is very important for many reasons. Many times new members can have an idea of which chapter they want to join, yet in the end, fall in love with a completely different chapter. I know this was the case for me, I had my eye on a certain chapter for the longest time but by the end of bid day, I had been mutually selected by a different chapter that aligned more with my core values.
Think About Your Values
In order to find a chapter that connects with you, you have to think about your own values. You have to be able to see how it is that you want to grow and what you want to get out of being a sorority woman. For me, I wanted to be more confident and by being a sorority woman I was able to achieve that. Prior to joining a chapter I had been very shy in college and did not necessarily try to interact with new people. After that, wherever I go one of my goals is to talk to someone new, not only does it help me be more confident in talking to people, but I can branch out.
See What Chapter Aligns with You
Rather than focusing on fitting into a chapter, see which one connects the most with you and your interests. This allows you to actually think about what you are looking for in a chapter whether it be specific philanthropy or the opportunities allowed by different chapters! I know this is something that I focused on when going through recruitment since I was able to truly see what I wanted to see of myself become by the end of college as well as the woman that I wanted to surround myself with.
Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Help
As a rho gamma, my main purpose is to make the recruitment process easier for the new members. This means that whatever questions new members might have, they can just reach out or come to me for help. Not only have I been in the shoes of the new members when I was trying to pick a chapter, but now I am on the other side. I have picked a chapter that I love and I want to help others find their chapter. I’m here for advice not only on what to talk about but even what to wear to the different days of recruitment!
So, these are some of my tips as a rho gamma for whoever is recruiting! This can be a very stressful, but exciting time so make sure to be well-rested, eat and drink lots of water as well as taking time to relax and de-stress! Good luck to all the women looking for their home away from home and welcome to Greek Life!
