5 Wardrobe Essentials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.
Your wardrobe expresses your personality. How you dress is a reflection of how you feel, and there are no two wardrobes alike. That being said, I believe there are a few key items that every woman should have in her closet. After surveying my friends, I have composed a list of 5 items that are essential to every collegiette’s wardrobe.

1. Pea Coat
If there is one thing I believe every girl should invest in, it is a well-fitted, comfy, durable pea coat. My mother always tells me, good quality items are worth the extra money. In addition, they are more likely to be classic and stay in style. Pea coats are great for every degree of cold weather, ranging from the chills of a 39 degree Davis afternoon, to the blizzards of a 7 degree snowstorm in New York. Pea coats are also versatile because they can be worn with virtually any outfit.

2. White Shirt

This item can be anything from a $5 3-pack of White Hanes found at Wal Mart to a nice button-down blouse at Banana Republic. White shirts are simple, yet elegant. In most articles about a guy’s favorite outfit on a girl, you can be sure to find at least one guy saying he loves to see a girl in a white shirt, jeans and converse. Simple, yet cute.

3. Little Black Dress
Oh yeah ladies, the LBD. It HAS to be in your closet! The LBD is pretty self-explanatory. You can use this sexy, slimming dress for going out to a fancy dinner with your friends, for a sorority/fraternity cocktail, or for a night at the club! The Little Black Dress comes in sooo many varieties that you can be sure to find a flattering style that’s right for you.

4. Jeans
Before you think, “Well duh, every girl should own jeans!” Let me explain. I don’t mean jeans that are borderline high waters, your boyfriend’s jeans, or jeans so tight you bake a muffin top. These need to be jeans that you LOVE: the perfect wash, the perfect length, the perfect fit, all to show off your legs and best assets. These are your go-to jeans when you want to look and feel your best.

5. Flats, Boots, Heels
Okay so this is technically more like 3 items, but I could not choose which type of shoe I find more valuable!

I believe that every wardrobe should include a good ballet flat, a comfortable boot, and a stunning pair of heels. Each type of shoe is valuable in so many different occasions that you shouldn’t miss out on having any of them.

When she is not dreaming about her life in New York, she is either running, watching shows on hulu, socializing or baking cupcakes. She loves anything that will make her laugh, sunny days  and everything purple!
