6 Easy Homemade Grab-and-Go’s for before, during, or in between Classes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.
With classes in full swing, there just aren’t enough hours in the day. Not enough hours to watch all the t.v. shows we want, skype all our friends back home, online window shop, and, ironically enough, eat a good meal or quick snack without constantly spending money from our tight college budget. Like many of my friends, I believe that time is money and money is time, so the quickest way to get food seems like the best thing for me. But spending money at your school’s coffee house or paying for fast food is neither healthy nor a good habit to get into. Whether it’s a quick breakfast, a sturdy snack, or dinner to get you through a night class, Her Campus has some easy ways to have you spending less and saving more.

6 Easy home made grab and go’s before, during, or in between classes:

1. Saying yes to yogurt:
Yogurt is not only nutritious, but also extremely yummy. And the only thing better than a quick yogurt in the morning is yogurt with fruit.
Instead of buying the parfait, make it. It takes all of two minutes and will end up saving you money that you can use on more important things like that cute nail polish you saw in Rite Aid. A packet of yogurt and a handful of fruit costs around $7 and will last a week, while our UCD Coho will charge around $3.50 for a single serving.

Why this works:
Yogurt and fruit are cheap, nutritious, and, best of all, portable. I mean to say that yogurt accommodates your inevitable habit of rolling out of bed at the last possible minute, doing your hair, 5 minutes of make up with only 3 minutes to spare before running out the door. Yogurt will keep you full and ready for that 8 am lecture.

2. Quesadillas
If you’re in college there really isn’t an easier, faster food to make than quesadillas. Talk about cheap to make.Tortillas and cheese are both ingredients that last long and can fill you up.
Making a quesadilla in between classes takes around 5 minutes and it honestly tastes so good. Just put a little butter in the pan before your tortilla and cheese and voila, you have a quesadilla ready to grab and go.

Why this works:
The quesadilla has a small amount of carbs and protein that are necessary to keep you focused.

3. Peanut butter and JellyBringing it back to the day of packed lunches is the best throwback for an easy snack. Seriously though, PB&J is a perfect go-to snack and takes so little time.

The ingredients are simple, just take some bread and throw on your favorite jelly, and peanut butter and you’re set to head off to the library.

Why this works:
A PB&J is filling enough to hold you over until your next class or meal.

4. Make your own salad/pasta salad
Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of tupperware in classrooms. A great way to eat healthy and save money is to make your own salads.
Nothing extravagant like they do at Pluto’s, but something simple. Lettuce, tomatoes and croutons- that’s all you need. If you can cut up the lettuce, buy baby tomatoes and throw it into the tupperware than you have a simple salad for class. And, of course, there are no limits to what you can add. Just bring a small, separate container of your dressing to prevent your salad from getting soggy and you’re set!

Why this works: Restaurants and the Coho charge so much money for a simple salad even though all of the ingredients are cheap. Why not save your hard earned money and make something you can throw together in two seconds? It’s a healthy snack that gets some of the daily vegetable requirements out of the way.

5. Bring your own water to class
It’s really simple! Stop using plastic water bottles and bring your own reusable ones to class! Staying hydrated is something some of us often forget to do.
It’s important that we have water around us so that we can keep feeding our brains and staying healthy. Make sure you’re drinking water and not wasting pocket change. This money can be for house boats, a cute Forever 21 dress, a date, a present or anything you want!

Why this works:
Having your own water bottle not only saves you money but you’re helping the environment!

6. Granola bars
Perhaps the most obvious answer for a quick fix snack is the granola bar. It’s quick, easy, tasty, and nutritious. Of the many bars out there, some popular choices include:
Luna bars, Nature Valley, Cliff, and Odwala. Having a granola bar during class or even for breakfast can give you the extra kick to prevent your stomach noises echoing around the lecture hall and hunger headaches creeping in during your discussions.

Why this works: Granola bars and energy bars are like a pick me up. They help you to stay focused, happy, and content.

Although the list goes on and on about easy ways to snack, it’s important that we collegiettesTM get our grub on and eat properly. As we all know, food is definitely a contributor to our happiness and sanity. So before you go and spend extra money eating out and buying snacks, try these easy tips!
