I like to think that two is better than one, and in this case, seeing two of California’s gems is a must. Contrary to popular belief, there is more to Sonoma and Napa than just wine tasting. Sure, wine tasting is definitely in the cards but if you want to take the unbeaten road, I can promise that there are some secret (and not so secret) things to do that will leave you just as high on life as any wine cellar can.
With a mere 25 minutes distance between these sister cities, only seeing one would be blasphemy. While Napa is more bustling than Sonoma, both places will offer you enough activities that will keep you awake all day long. So grab a pair of comfy walking shoes and your sexy sunglasses and prepare to embark on an adventure comparable to a National Geographic magazine.
What to do in Sonoma:
The Olive Press: When the taste of wine makes you want to burn down the vineyards, take a breath and step into this olive oil tasting bar. Seriously, how many times (or places) have you tried olive oil. With over twenty different flavors, one of them is bound to find a way into your purse. The best part? They even have olive oil ice cream.
Hot Air Balloons: Don’t deny it. What girl doesn’t secretly want to float away on a magic carpet balloon ride. Escape into the clouds and experience this whole new world. Ahem, sorry about the Aladdin reference but on a different note, as you soar above you can catch views of both the Pacific coast and the redwood forests. It’s a win-win.
Segway tour: Who doesn’t want to ride a Segway? And riding one through vineyards, historical Sonoma, and scenic views only makes it that much better. Along the way taste wine and cheese from several different vineyards, making the tour that more interesting.
Sonoma Coast State Beach: Whether you want to get your tan on or just need to take dip, this beach is your place. Pack a picnic or go fishing, you can’t go wrong here.
What to do in Napa:
Kayak or Canoe: Why not? Head out for a day of frolicking in the water and trying to tip your friends’ kayak over. The Gualala river is perfect for a leisurely day of fun and relaxation, and you can pretend to be a kid all over again.
Driven Raceway: A little outside of the city, this go-kart isn’t for babies. An indoor go-kart racing that allows you to reach up to speeds of 45 miles an hour as you attempt to do laps around your BFFs.
Castello Di Amorosa: Yes, this is a real castle from Europe. Each brick from the original structure was transported here and rebuilt to make stunning estate. Not only is it over 121,000 feet and has 107 rooms, it even has a dungeon and drawbridge. There’s no excuse for not seeing it.
Bodega Bay Sailing: Amateur or pro, this is the time to learn to sail. Catch some waves as you maneuver yourself through the tides. Or have your friends do it as you sit back and watch them struggle. Either way, someone’s going to get a laugh. Or a face first dip into the water.
