Healthy Drinking Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCD chapter.

It’s Springtime, the favorite quarter of every Aggie. From Picnic Day to Houseboats, you know that alcohol is a key element of this season.

The common advice is “Don’t drink on an empty stomach” so here is the usual scenario:

Heavy meal + Alcohol + Hangover meal = Goodbye summer body !

To enjoy your Davis days the carpe diem way without worrying about gaining weight, follow these simple tricks:

Before Drinking
1. Almonds: Eat 8-10 raw almonds. The healthy fats keep your body slim as well as boost your metabolism for alcohol. This prevention remedy comes from the Native Americans.

2. Tomato Juice: The fructose contained in tomatoes stimulates your body to digest the alcohol quicker.

3. Lemon Juice: Just squeeze fresh lemon juice without mixing it with anything else to drink. This is my personal favorite trick. It may tastes bitter but it works wonderfully. If you want something sweeter, prepare a hot lemon tea with ginger slices.

While drinking:
1.Water: Your body dehydrates while processing the liquors so alternate a drink with a cup of water.
2. Don’t mix beers with liquors: Try to stick to one kind of drink.
3. Drink in moderation: Even if you know all the tricks on earth to increase your alcohol tolerance, you will still blackout if you don’t know your limits. People drink to feel free, not to get sh*tface so stay classy!

After drinking:

You always feel starving the next day because the alcohol makes your blood sugar drop. However, don’t destroy all your hard work by indulging a fatty hamburger. Instead, seek alternatives to satisfy your crying stomach.

1. Scrambled eggs (on whole wheat toast with baked beans): The eggs purify your liver while the bread and beans stabilize your agitated digestive system.

2. Banana and honey milkshake: The combination of these healthy ingredients soothes your stomach, rehydrates your body and supplies the vitamins depleted during drinking.

3. Outdoor Exercises: An intense workout fueled with fresh air is the most effective way to detoxify your body. In addition, you shred off the calories gained from drinking. Bike around the arboretum or run through the Greenbelt or best yet, swim a few laps and distress at Rec Pool opening on April 17th.

Extra Tip: Milk Thistle

The plant contains ingredients that improve the liver function and cleanse away the toxins of liquor. You can easily find the supplements at Rite Aid, Costco and Vitamin World.

Alcohol is not the only way to embark on crazy college adventures but if you decide to drink, safety always comes first.

If you remember nothing from my article, at least listen to this ancient Greek wisdom “Know thyself. Nothing in excess.”
